Hey, DU, I just got back from the Doctor with some bad news. And just to clear it up, no there is nothing life threatening, I won't be joining our friends on the In Memoriam page anytime soon. Though it is sight threatening. I've been experiencing odd visual disturbances since late August. I visited a Neuro-opthmologist today (forgive me if that is spelled incorrectly) and explained my problem. They did some standard tests and asked questions, I told them what I was experiencing. The Doctor diagnosed me with Positive Persistant Visual Migraine Phenomena. An extremely irritating visual condition that remains mysterious since it was discovered about 21 years ago. There are theories, but no one has been able to determine the cause. The whole thing is a big blur (and if you could see through my eyes, literally). The doctor said that there is no real treatment for it. It's unpredictable. He said it could be gone by tomorrow or last forever. I did some research, many people reported it
going away after a matter of weeks, months, and a few times even years. That gives me hope, but the idea of this experience being permanent is frightening. In a situation like this, I'll just do my best to ignore it and hope and pray it goes away. I certainly won't let it hold me back from joining you all in the fight against the coming tyranny of this new administration . Please keep me in your hopes and prayers. Thanks, DU. Keep fighting fascism!

(4,909 posts)I have this. My doctor calls it ocular migraine or atypical migraine. How long have you had it?

(41,987 posts)They come and go fast thank goodness. I would not want to have them long term.
Once you've done all you can look into some alternative stuff. I am really conservative when it comes to that but explore.

(65,408 posts)just lose vision. Your visual field disappears and becomes nothingness. I only ever got them in my left eye, and fortunately I was able to make them stop by sleeping for 30-60 minutes.
My doctor daughter said that brief ocular migraines like that might be the result of a transient ischaemic attack (TIA).
Good luck! I hope this doesn't progress but goes into remission for you.

(14,487 posts)Mine were identical images in both fields of vision. I could still see, but I basically had an optical illusion of a shimmering, colorful jagged circle, expanding slowly from pinpoint until it got large enough to go outside my field of vision.
Very much like this:

(65,408 posts)I don't get a headache at all with my ocular migraines. My visual field just becomes an empty nothingness--not blackness, just a void.
It is hard to describe because it has no visual aspect at all, but it is terrifying. If I had lost it in both eyes, I don't think I could have handled it. Even in just one eye it felt like an existential crisis! Much worse than just not being able to see.

(46,166 posts)The first one was triggered when I was driving home in very bright sunshine after a big snowstorm. No sunglasses and the sun must have been reflecting off the snow. It happened as I was driving in a westerly direction in the later afternoon here in the Denver, Colorado area. It's a tough time to drive even without all that snow on the ground.
As soon as I got home I called my eye doctor. He said it was a visual migraine. It lasted until the shimmering arc drifted down and out of my sight. My brother also had them.
I had them once in a while after that for several years. Then they went away and never returned.
Take heart and have hope! They can go away.
My thoughts are with you.

(25,383 posts)I would get a 2nd opinion regarding treatment. I get occular migraines and take anti-seizure medication to prevent them. I also have other auras with my migraines, including vertigo. I was plagued with migraines from age 8 until I started anti--convulsants in my 30s.
Those visual disturbances can be kind of scary, so I'm glad you have an answer.
My mom had the same thing and never got a headache. Her's went away without treatment.
ETA: I just read all the responses in the thread. Sorrry didn't realize doctor told you it isn't occular migraine.

(25,862 posts)Losing my vision is one of my irrational fears. I've been fortunate in that while I was always very nearsighted, glasses and contact lenses have corrected that little problem.
I sincerely hope that a miracle cure happens to you.

(3,424 posts)I had something similar after looking at a very bright light in bathroom for awhile because there had been water spray coming down from something broken upstairs.
I began having parts of my vision with roundish "halos' that I could not see through. They lasted a couple days then finally stopped. Then I went to a store with fluorescent lighting and it started again and I panicked and had to leave store.
It got better soon after. I'm saying all this because maybe bright light may add to this? I stay in low light as much as possible now. This may be different than what you have, but I'm hopeful you will get better.
