Heard from some relatives of mine in Pennsylvania. My in laws actually.
Have voted for the GOP forever and Trump this time around.
They just found out their GOP Statehouse and Gov failed them.
Turns out PA is one of several states that have not upgraded their driver's licenses to have the non counterfeit-able holograms on it and they found out they won't be able to get on a plane for trips after next January with their current state issued ID
They would need to buy passports to travel on a domestic flight.
They are older, don't travel much except to fly out here to CA to visit us
They are on fixed incomes so the cost of passports is prohibitive.
They expressed their anger on Facebook and I let them have it.
A GOP state senator wrote and passed a bill that PA would not submit to "federal gubmint" regulations passed after 9/11 so they get what they voted for.
If they were never outraged about folks down south being jobbed out of voting rights with the GOP making them jump through hoops, pay through the nose and try to find an ever dwindling supply of DMV offices because they don't want black people to have ID's that will let them vote why should I, or them, care about your ID problem? It's all connected. All GOP policy at work.
My wife was mad at me and upset because it's her parents but I was like "elections have consequences"
So I was like "we'll buy them passports if we have to but the rest of the state is screwed and fuck them for it."
They don't like it, then they have to stop voting against their own interests with the GOP all the time.
and that's how I feel about the rest of the red states right now too.
Outrage? For you? When you lose your Social Security or get a coupon for your Medicare?
Angry for you? I don't think so.
I'm going to work to protect my blue states and the liberal parts of the country that can fight.
Maybe we can stem the damage that will be done by Trump, Ryan and Co.
You are on your own red state GOP voters. Enjoy that rugged individualism you embrace so much.
Sorry for my liberal brethren in those red states but Trump, Ryan, McConnell told these neighbor suckers of yours what they wanted to do, the suckers voted for them, and now they will do it because Democrats will not obstruct EVERYTHING like the GOP did to Obama.
So America is going to get what it wanted.
God save them all.

(46,166 posts)Not that you'd know right now. But I don't have any Rs in my close circle of family and friends. My aunt who voted Republican passed away a few years ago. So it would be interesting given how much has gone on these last 24 hours.
Hang in there. You took a bold step since they're you're in laws. But things are moving so fast and it's frightening given the direction Trump is taking our nation. I feel like a pressure cooker myself.

(1,580 posts)to get a passport by June 6th if the legislature doesn't fix this. We have had 7 extensions.... years and years to get this done. Fucked up Okla legislature doesn't want the gov't intrusion. Since half the state works on federal properties, air and army bases, they won't be able to go to work without a passport. They won't be able to get into a federal courthouse, or even the Social Security office without proper ID. Delivery drivers won't be able to get on bases. The list goes on and on. And they will have to drive instead of fly. Now they are screaming. I have zero sympathy for them.

His interview with Mike Wallace is one of my favorite Youtube clips!
Very thoughtful in his approach to the industry.
