Facing 10 years in prison for protesting

From the short article:

IN AN ominous sign of the Trump administration's intention to crack down on the right to protest, federal prosecutors plan to charge 230 activists arrested on Inauguration Day with felony riot charges, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.....
Jeffrey Light, an attorney based in Washington, D.C., who has represented protesters whose rights have been violated for more than a decade, said he's never seen felony riot charges filed against demonstrators........
The Trump administration may hope to make such harsh treatment of demonstrations and protests the "new normal." It will be up to activists, civil liberties advocacy groups, civil rights attorneys and other social justice organizations to mount broad defense campaigns to respond to these blatant attacks on the right to dissent.

As part of Making America Hate Again, dissent must be severely punished. Even if, as during the World Bank protests, the punishment results in significant financial penalties for the Government. The Trump Administration obviously hopes that the severity of the crackdown inhibits even more protests.

It is up to American citizens to show that such tactics will only encourage further protests.

infiltrators to start violence in the crowd so there is "reason" to arrest, only the violent guys aren't the ones arrested. It's a common practice nowadays.

This has been escalating exponentially in recent years. Expect this to become the norm as well. Perhaps overwhelming the violent actors as soon as they reveal themselves, somehow. I find this all so alarming and paralyzing.

It was an FBI program that used infiltrators to discredit social justice movements in the 1950s and 1960s. And I have read about similar efforts surrounding the Occupy protests and the Iraq anti-war movement.

On a personal note, at one point during the Bush years, our church based social justice group had 2 people attend a few meetings. Both promoted, or rather unsuccessfully tried to promote violent actions. We explained about our beliefs and after a short period of time they left.

That also happened at the Chicago NATO protests but the protests were overwhelmingly peaceful.

it was the trial run for urban attacks. These are the ones who were kicking in doors at 3am. I suppose they want to come home now and this is a way to do it unseen.

a line has been crossed. And that line was crossed. Now it is simply a matter of convincing the American people that protesters deserve what they get.

And given that it is likely that the vast majority of US citizens have never participated in a protest, convincing them might not be too difficult.

The Women's March is the model to aspire to, not smashing limos owned by Muslim immigrants. The Women's March showed the world what American values are, and those values do not include violence against law enforcement.

nor are they ever.
They are anarchists or possible maggot supporters causing trouble.
I am a white middle aged woman and I understand there has been a LOT of violence against protesters/ people of color BY Law enforcement.
They dont get a pass on their violence.

A very few, and during the march they committed some vandalism, but they were shunned by the great majority of the peaceful marchers.

They are like ticks riding on a host but their numbers are tiny. The only thing they can do is attract media attention. which is why their tactics must be opposed by marchers and spokespersons.

Better build more PRIVATE jails.

The GOP version of the American way is to never miss an opportunity to profit from suffering.
