There would have to be an independent prosecutor appointed, and neither Sessions nor Trumpy would allow that. If the GOP grows a spine and demands facts and justice, the story changes. But that's a long shot.

Here's what can happen: Intelligence finishes their investigation and establishes a link between Russia and Trumpy during the campaign, and adds that extra conclusion to the earlier one, namely that Russia intervened and favored Trumpy. That's when the GOP can't hide behind their hands anymore. But before then, there's too much room for plausible deniability.

Of course, if the sex tape surfaces, we know two things. Trumpy resigns and Putin didn't get what he wanted.
