Experts on authoritarianism say Trumps presidency is getting even worse
One scholar described Steve Bannons role in the administration as pretty terrifying.
Donald Trump has been president for just over a week, and experts on authoritarianism are already expressing serious concern about a number of policy decisions and executive orders made by the new administration.
After a few eventful days filled with new executive orders, ThinkProgress followed up last weeks survey of academics with some new questions for Americas authoritarianism scorecard. Heres what they said:
President Trump is disturbingly similar to candidate Trump.
Robert Paxton, the Mellon Professor Emeritus of Social Science at Columbia University: Its hard to say we are on track to establish a fascist dictatorship. Alternative forces are still there. Though theres not much doubt of the desire of Trump to govern as dictator.
Sheri Berman, a political scientist at Barnard College: I watched {the ABC} interview. I dont understand why Im still stunned, but I still cant believe Im watching this. Thats who he is. A lot of people pointed out what is both obvious but shocking at same time. Hes the same person he was during the campaign so in a way its very straight forward and theres been no change. Some of us implicitly expected both his personality and policies would moderate somewhat. We got what we should have expected.

(115,744 posts)Even the most trivial loss sends him into fits. He won the presidency but he's apoplectic about losing the popular vote and has made up a story that "illegal" immigrants accounted for those 3 million votes. Normal people would just say, what the hell, I won the electoral vote so who cares? Not Trump. He can't bear to lose at anything. It's known that he even cheats at golf. His authoritarianism is escalating because he can see that there is an enormous amount of opposition to him and the courts are ruling against him. I have no doubt that he's enraged and he'll fight back even harder because he just can't stand to lose.

I am becoming convinced we may hit a point of no return
