Everywhere I survey on the net the conservatives and GOP are determined to basically dismantle the entire federal government and turn it over to corporations and the religious right. In fact conservatives and the GOP are privately overjoyed and laughing about really killing 43,000 people a year due to no access to medical care. And 43,000 is conservative. I believe the country will end up in desperate shape unless we can obstruct them somehow.
I do not see any sign of the GOP cracking on their entire agenda. And if you watch Trump and his cronies they are starting to mock the opposition. So I do not know what we do at this point. All I know is that you cannot find a Republican legislator in sight. They are now well into their bunkers.
In Colorado we are getting no response. And if you show up at one of their offices to demonstrate you will get arrested. The electorate is being locked out no matter where you look. With no press to challenge Trump and his lackeys we are in tough shape.
By the time we reach 2018 we WON'T NEED A MILITARY TO PROTECT US. The country will be gone. And anyone in the military will be risking their lives to protect JUST THE RICH AND WEALTHY protected by a totalitarian GOP.
I just want to slap Trump voters silly for what they have done to all of us. I know I have been rightly accused of being pessimistic and on a downer. Lord knows I want like hell to be optimistic and hopeful, but it is so hard after watching the decline since Reagan.
Now I really hope I am wrong and things swing around. I just do not see a lot of movement and I see new completely outragious initiatives appear every day from the state to the national level. And I see no opposition of value from the MSM.

our revolutionary ancestors? Where would we be. Have courage and know you are one of million
who want to save our country.

(10,602 posts)These legislators are going to have to not be able to go out in public without someone hounding them. There town halls are going to have to be over run with opposition and challenge. They will have to be cornered and forced to answer. Protests will have to be peaceful but forceful and louder. We have to be willing to shout them down and challenge their rhetoric on the spot.
It is too bad the media does not get combative and mock the press conferences.

(5,093 posts)We have gotten used to easy. We have lived soft lives. Now we are tested as have other generations.
There are unique challenges to our test. Your original post sounded defeatist. Maybe you are,
like many of us fearful. Fear in the face of danger is normal. We must take courage from one another
and from our values. We must encourage each other and trust that our values will sustain us as
others have. Do you think that those who hid the Jews in Germany were not afraid or the Brits
under the Blitz or the Syrian peoples today?

We have a tendency to look and point at Europe when our ("United States" own oppressive, sordid, and horrid behavior gets dismissed. Those who were defiantly anti-slavery helped generations of us (African Americans) survive times worse than the stuff that Drumpf is trying to dish out (at least so far).

(5,093 posts)we would not have the opportunities to stand and resist today. As Franklin said: A Republic, if you can keep it.
He did not promise it would easy. They knew our republic would challenged again and again.

Yes these struggles had to be fought over and over, and they still do. But people went on fighting. And they will.
Trump mocks the opposition, so what. It's what he does.
TheMastersNemesis
(10,602 posts)There has to be a way to rattle them and get them off their game. The opposition has to be like a mama bear whose cubs are threatened. And the protests have to be such that the media cannot ignore.

(34,661 posts)these protests will carry more and more weight. First out Lame Media does not have a clue, and after another major go around of Protests, then they will take a look because their Demo Numbers will have gone South in a Major way. Remember,it was Nixon's Threats that made the Media get their collective asses in gear and started to asked the question of what is really going on.
Trump will blow his cool with in another week and over react as expected which will be his total undoing..

Disney/ABC as well as CBS has drifted more and more Right Wing and being a listener for certain descriptive phrasing, the floor Producers and Script Writers are going more and more in that direction.

(10,602 posts)I would post private information of GOP legislators everywhere on the net or I would flood their private residences with protest mail and jam their home phones. I would push to have demonstrations right outside of their gated communities or their homes. They would have no place to hide.
I would pursue all legal means to harass them. And I would put of some really nasty and brutal bill boards in their districts. I would be out to make sure they were scare to even show their face anywhere.

(10,602 posts)Sadly I am not rich and in a position to do such a thing. These legislators must be sent a message that they will have no where to hide. The must be trapped or cornered and be put in a position where they must face their voters. Right now they are all in hiding.

Protests vs no protests? I say that they have their place to keep us together and focused on the next steps.

(9,808 posts)Bennet's office answers the phone, every time. I get responses about a week later (they're canned, but they're responding.) Polis responds every time. DeGette and Perlmutter respond. (I don't know about the others because they're not mine and I mostly don't follow their response rates.) Hick and the whole Dem Congressional have publicly made statements on every issue, and they've been in line with Dem position. Polis' calendar sucks, but Bennet's is pretty good and they're in state on a regular basis. What more do you want from them? That's not rhetorical -- what need are they not fulfilling?
Who is being the problem? Gardner? Coffman? Buck? What do you expect? They're spineless cowards and always have been. Just keep calling their local offices and showing up at their events. The more often they behave badly, the better. We want them looking like the pond scum they are. We want them sneaking out the back door and getting caught.
Who's been arresting? There are means of demonstrating that don't bring arrests. Stand across the street from the office. That's more visible anyway. It's more useful to turn their electorate against them and bring out the less than regular voters.
I know venting feels good. But the problem is that it doesn't accomplish anything. (Note that there's no other emotion that requires venting -- you don't have to bleed off excess joy or elation.) Venting without a strategic or tactical action is just spreading frustration and demoralization.
Let's talk about who is being a specific problem, what exactly they're doing, and get to work on strategy. We may have to write off the R side of our slate, other than remaining a gadfly, and focus on state, county and city level issues with the state Rs, while supporting our D slate.

(129,128 posts)not just every 2 years for Congress or 4 years for a President. All those folks out there protesting can also channel that energy towards getting people to the polls in their state and local elections so we can start taking America back from the bigots at the lowest levels of government. That will help put us on better footing for the 2020 census. These "off-year" elections shouldn't be consistently down in the 20% - 40% turnout range.
