Steve Bannon in 2010: 'Islam is not a religion of peace. Islam is a religion of submission'

(CNN)President Trump's chief strategist, former Breitbart executive Steve Bannon, once dismissed the notion that Islam is a religion of peace, describing it in a 2010 radio interview as "a religion of submission."

Bannon made the comments on "Western Word Radio with Avi Davis," an online right-wing radio station.

In the segment, Bannon, who at the time served on the board of Breitbart, criticized former President George W. Bush for what he and fellow guest conservative columnist Diana West described as injecting political correctness into the federal government.

Bannon mocked Bush for proclaiming "Islam is a religion of peace."

Islam is indeed a religion of submission: its central teaching is submission to God. But Bannon twists this basic, simple teaching into something ominous. Submission to God is not necessarily the opposite of peace.

And Christianity is also to a large extent a religion of submission. It all depends on how God is understood: if God is seen as a strict lawmaker with a conservative or violent agenda, submission will take a conservative or violent shape. If God is understood as a God of love who wishes human flourishing, then submission will take the form of peace.

Bannon is a bad, bad man.

Are we really going to read these religious texts (the Koran or the Bible) and look at how women are treated and claim these religions aren't about submission?

One preached to individuals about their individual relationship with God, the other became a warrior chieftain and raised an army of conquest and enslavement and government leader.
