http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/trump-propecia-haiir-loss_us_58936376e4b06f344e4058a6In a snicker-worthy disclosure by President Donald Trumps longtime personal physician, readers of The New York Times learned Thursday that the leader of the free world takes a small daily dose of the drug finasteride ― otherwise known as Propecia ― which is used to treat male-pattern baldness.
The revelation by Dr. Harold N. Bornstein that the president uses a prostate-related drug to grow scalp hair was not previously known publicly, according to the Times story, and appears to explain why Trump has a very low level of prostate specific antigen, or PSA, a marker sometimes used to diagnose prostate cancer. The newspaper said it had four telephone conversations with Bornstein, whose office is in Manhattan, about Trumps overall health.

The FDA-approved pill has been called into question, with emerging research and a slew of lawsuits suggesting that finasteride may be more dangerous than previously believed, reported Mens Journal. Users report that its side effects inability to orgasm, painful erections, chronic depression, insomnia, brain fog, and suicidal thoughts can last long after patients stop taking the pill.
Since 2011, at least 1,245 lawsuits have been filed against Propecias manufacturer, Merck, alleging that the company didnt sufficiently warn users of sexual and cognitive side effects. Patients and physicians reportedly call the effects Post-Finasteride Syndrome because, they say, symptoms often persist after discontinuing the drug. The National Institutes of Health has added PFS to its rare-diseases database. Merck told Mens Journal the the company stands behind the demonstrated safety and efficacy profile of Propecia.

Abdulmaged Traish, a professor of biochemistry and urology at Boston University School of Medicine, said scientists are just beginning to investigate finasteride's effects on the brain and nervous system.
"We are just beginning to venture in that direction. It might be in the next five to 10 years that we may find there's more to this story than we know now," Traish said.
He said he would not advise men to take this drug to treat a cosmetic problem like hair loss.

Persistent sexual, emotional, and cognitive impairment post-finasteride: a survey of men reporting symptoms.

Abstract
Finasteride is a synthetic 5-? reductase inhibitor, which prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone and has been used for more than 20 years in the treatment of male pattern hair loss. Randomized, controlled trials have associated finasteride with both reversible and persistent adverse effects. In this pilot study, we sought to characterize sexual and nonsexual adverse effects that men reported experiencing at least 3 months after stopping the medication. Based on previous research on persistent side effects of finasteride, we constructed an Internet survey targeting six domains: physical symptoms, sexual libido, ejaculatory disorders, disorders of the penis and testes, cognitive symptoms, and psychological symptoms and was e-mailed to patients who reported experiencing symptoms of side effects of finasteride. Responses from 131 generally healthy men (mean age, 24 years) who had taken finasteride for male pattern hair loss was included in the analysis. The most notable finding was that adverse effects persisted in each of the domains, indicating the possible presence of a "post-finasteride syndrome."

About a month ago, Dr. Bornstein said he told Mr. Trumps secretary, Rhona Graff, You know, I should be the White House physician. Past presidents like Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush brought their own doctors to the White House, but others have used a White House physician.
Dr. Bornstein was invited to Mr. Trumps inaugural, although he said it was not as pleasant an experience as he expected. He had to walk a long way to a spot where he thought there would be a chair he said he has a painful back ailment and nerve damage to a leg but when he got there, there was no chair.
He stood behind a tree and never heard anyone speak because I was so uncomfortable from my back and being cold. He felt, he said, absolutely miserable. It seemed to take forever to leave because of the heavy security, he said. The situation was the same at an inaugural ball where there were no tables and chairs. So, he said, unable to chat comfortably with others, he and his wife, Melissa, returned to their hotel early.

(4,111 posts)1. What is like to know is
How it is ethical for his doctor to divulge this information to the Times - unless Trump have him permission. And I find it difficult to believe that Trump would do so.

(865 posts)4. You are correct --
unless djt gave permission, this is unethical. Also illegal. Cannot imagine djt would give permission. But it's that or doc messed up or report is made up. I have no way of knowing. But if I were betting, I'd put my money on doc messing up.

(108,995 posts)5. That doctor seems like a flake. He also said in the Times interview
that he would like to be DT's White House doctor.
I think he just interviewed himself out of that job.

(9,313 posts)3. Wow. I had no idea.
What could be more dangerous than an oval office occupied by a cognitively impaired psychopathic narcissist? (The latter being pre-finasteride.)
