(512 posts)I enjoy being me. I guess it's wrong to express an opinion in here that differs from others. I won't say what I'm really thinking or else I may get scolded by the admins. See, I was here under another username previously with around 12,000 posts. So I know the ground rules. In the immortal words of somebody, "See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya."

Edgar Fucking Winter? Yeah, that would have been a hit (not).
I've never heard of Marcia Ball and I suspect I'm not alone.
And the Dixie Chicks? They've been in purgatory since 2003.
Willie's a fine entertainer but the anti-weed wingnuts would bust a gasket.
Not a single one of your selections had the broad appeal of Gaga. Even when they hate her, they sing along to her music.
And she was SUPERB.

(6,670 posts)She's a blues musician. But the SB halftime show does need someone with broad appeal.
I don't much care for pop music, but I really enjoyed Lady Gaga's performance.
MADem
(135,425 posts)the music of choice for the halftime.
As a die-hard fan of the late, great BB King (I've seen him live since he was a young blood on his feet sweating out the tunes to an old lion with the diabetes, sitting but still picking) I wouldn't ever miss an occasion to see him, but I wouldn't expect even him in his prime to carry that venue--it just requires a different kind of pizzazz.

(512 posts)I was just trying to make a point hat maybe the NFL could have someone from the host city or region playing halftime. I love music and fully support local musicians. Too bad you don't.
La Lioness Priyanka
(53,866 posts)This is hardly the platform for local musicians who I actually do support by going to local gigs

(16,245 posts)Most of the time, the NFL seems to play it fairly safe and mainstream.
But I agree with you on Marcia Ball. Talk about entertaining! Just not very well known, sadly.

(14,178 posts)I have to say I really wanted her to lay into Trump, or have some more symbolism in her stage or act. But I appreciated the first part with the Obama-like message of red and blue being one country. Anything more literal would invite all kinds of abuse against her and may just be worse in that it would open it up into a hate fest back and forth.
She kept her dignity and actually played 3D chess with all the pre-critics that were all ready with their poisoned pens to smear her. So she retains a reputation of impartiality which will serve her for any future moments when she wants to speak out more forcefully.

(1,017 posts)Also the beginning with "and justice for all" together with Born This Way lyrics about straight, gay, bi, trans etc.... made it political without being too obvious.

(9,771 posts)So, yeah, looks like subtlety was employed, but anti-RW message sent within a kick-ass performance.

(134 posts)I may be reaching, and haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, but I think her biggest political jab went un-noticed.
Bad Romance was about Trump-Putin. The song has the obvious doomed relationship theme, but there is a reference here that I don't think anyone got. When Bad Romance starts playing, and through most of the track, the stars coming out of the ground are red, a direct reference to a Russian national symbol. The kicker is this, though...
The music video for Bad Romance revolves around the kidnapping of a young woman who is then pushed into a chemical dependency (in this case, Vodka) before being sold into sexual slavery to the Russian Mafia. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Romance or the music video itself.
Maybe I'm making a connection where there isn't one but, frankly, this was the song I expected her to make a statement with. Given that, it's quite possible I'm overreaching, but interested to know what others think.

(20,222 posts)Actually, I'm pretty sure all the half time shows are pre-recorded. They want it to be perfect and there's no way to do a sound check.

(5,914 posts)I'm pretty sure a great deal of her performance was sung live (she even seemed a little out of breath for a second), but some of that (like singing during the wire acrobatics) would have to be taped.
Lady Gaga is ridiculously talented. I remember one time her audio went out during a performance, and she just continued singing beautifully a capella without missing a single beat. She is the real deal.
TexasBushwhacker
(20,222 posts)I just know that the Red Hot Chili Peppers spilled the beans a couple of years ago. Pretend playing and singing to a pre-recorded tape wasn't their choice, in fact they almost dropped the gig when they found out they couldn't perform live. But there's just so many variables, performing in a semi-closed space that wasn't designed for acoustics.
LiberalLovinLug
(14,178 posts)And having a snit fit.
I guessed at it being a combination of taped and live as well.

(51 posts)mind you I'm a great grandmother but think that this woman is so talented and tonight's performance was the best superbowl half time ever! She's just the best ever and I celebrate her life, talent and let's hear it for Lady Gaga for whom I have great admiration and even at my age, I was rocking out to that music and her wonderful performance!

(3,568 posts)I saw her in Rome when she was around 11 and still had it. Now when she flies down through the roof she has to resort to using cables and stuff. So sad. She had tremendous volume back then too. Now it's all microphones and giant speakers. She really needs to just let it go. Nothing is forever.

(6,496 posts)and give people a good time. I think that was the right thing to do to for that occasion. She has spoken up before. Most people know where she stands when it comes to politics. I think the point was to have some fun because people have been down about the election. Try to remind people we can still have fun together.
