I'm surprised it needed to be said (on DU - I would expect to have to say it out in the reql world).

.......Muslim Americans, Asian Americans. Do we really need hyphenation?

You're insisting on twisting my meaning!

is because it has real life meaning. if you are white in AZ, no one is asking you to show ID. if you are hispanic, this is happening to you a lot.

Yes, we need hyphenation because pretending that the world treats us equally is a myth. A myth that some of us cannot afford to have perpetuated.

you are a white american, and that brings with it some inherent benefits.

You may call me Terry, you may call me Jimmy
You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy
You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray
You may call me anything but no matter what you say.

But you're gonna have to serve somebody.

This was a sunny February day during the Black Panther and riot era of the 60's. The sun was low in the sky and I saw the tallest black man with a big Afro that I had ever seen. I squinted as I looked up at him being that the sun was so low in the sky in February. He said in a very low Barry White voice, "What you looking at cracker ?" I remember walking into the store wondering why that man just referred to me as a saltine. A little humor for a dreary February day....LOL

As long as the term isn't perjorative, I doubt I care. Honky privilege.

...I guess "White" works better. It's shorter and easily understood. If I'm lost and they need a description, it will do. But, unless it's necessary, I would skip the label altogether.

Being called white sucks. Kind of bland. European origin is tied into the meaning of the word caucasian.
