Arson caused the blaze that gutted the Victoria Islamic Center on Jan. 28, investigators announced Wednesday.
"We appeal to the arsonist or arsonists to put an end to this tragedy and surrender to law enforcement," mosque members said in a news release issued immediately after the investigators' announcement. "The blessing of not having loss of lives or physical injuries makes it easier to try to correct the wrong and fix the damage before its too late."
Investigators said evidence does not indicate the fire was a "biased crime."
The investigators are working feverishly to follow all leads that will lead to the arrest of the person or persons responsible, said Victoria Fire Chief Taner Drake in a written statement.

(61,695 posts)A hate crime, like you said. I bet the arsonist(s) mumbled "Trump's new 'muricah" when they lit it up. There's plenty of them in south texas. I hope the Southern Poverty Law Center is on top of it.

(15,222 posts)While this family would not be involved in arson, they are one of the most ardent Trump supporting families I've ever seen, including having at least one member who flew from Victoria, Texas to attend the inauguration.
This was a hate crime and I hope the perpetrator(s) are swiftly brought to justice. I'll believe that when I see it, of course. My guess is that the whole town supports Trump and his ban.

(61,695 posts)(Multiple highways intersect through and around Victoria) and it is really politically, religiously "dumb" except for a few thousand good people. And they think they've got a great place to live with their crappy schools, funky smells in the morning from the plastics plant 15 miles to the east, extreme heat and humidity, and generally ugly city.

There was always a sense of privilege, I thought, with O&G people, like they were the only essential services. Texas now gets at least 20% of household energy from windfarms and other clean, renewable sources. O&G people will be rare antiquities eventually.

(15,222 posts)Let's hope so! We need to invest in clean energy, but Trump will set us back 50 years.
As you say, however, "eventually" it WILL happen.
