Must read: Resistance analysis of Press Conference

Trump knows his base hates the media. The entire performance was directed at his hardcore supporters to galvanize them. While the rest of the country saw it as a disaster, they won't. It is meant to energize them. Trump has demonstrated great skill in appealing to this segment of the population and should not be underestimated. The fake news mantra also serves to insulate himself against what is almost certain to be further revelations about ties to Russia.

Not merely Trump going off rails, but Trump is a manipulative con artist who had certainly consulted with Bannon who encouraged him to deliberately change narrative to shore up perception of his base so they wouldn't be influenced and turn against him by the flood of negative media

Trump & Bannon are masters at mind games. Their manipulations worked during campaign to keep millions of followers believing the falsehoods, so they are staying in campaign mode.
