NY Times - "A Party to the Russian Connection" - Why McConnell Will Not Investigate

Part of the reason why Republicans are obstructing any type of independent inquiry is because it will highlight their aggressive efforts to oppose any disclosure of Trump's Russian connections during the campaign. They are in too deep.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/17/opinion/a-party-to-the-russian-connection.html?action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=opinion-c-col-left-region&region=opinion-c-col-left-region&WT.nav=opinion-c-col-left-region

President Trump’s disturbing Russian connections present an acute danger to American national security. According to reports this week, Mr. Trump’s team maintained frequent contact with Russian officials, including senior intelligence officers, during the campaign. This led to concerns about possible collusion with one of America’s principal strategic adversaries as it tried to influence the election in Mr. Trump’s favor. On Monday, Mr. Trump’s national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, was forced to resign after details of his communications with the Russian ambassador emerged.

Republican leaders in Congress now bear the most responsibility for holding the president accountable and protecting the nation. They can’t say they didn’t see the Russian interference coming. They knew all along.

Early in 2015, senior Republican congressional leaders visited Ukraine and returned full of praise for its fight for independence in spite of Russia’s efforts to destabilize the country and annex some of its regions. And in June, coincidentally just before Mr. Trump announced his campaign for the Republican nomination, they met with Ukraine’s prime minister in Washington — one of many meetings I attended as a senior aide to the House Republican Conference.

As the presidential race wore on, some of those leaders began to see parallels between Russia’s disinformation operations in Ukraine and Europe and its activities in the United States. They were alarmed by the Kremlin-backed cable network RT America, which was running stories intended, they judged, to undermine Americans’ trust in democratic institutions and promote Mr. Trump’s candidacy. Deeply unsettled, the leaders discussed these concerns privately on several occasions I witnessed.

Putin's quiet message to the Republican leadership:

"You let Trump happen, and I'll help make sure Hillary does not."

The Supreme Court was obviously as much on the Republicans' minds as it was on ours. The ONLY reason for McTurtle to risk denying a moderate like Garland as much as a hearing would have been if he was reasonably certain NINE MONTHS BEFORE THE ELECTION that the next president, all logic to the contrary, would be a Republican.

The last time I saw this study, they were ranked below used-car salespersons and carnival barkers (no disrespect meant to either of those fine occupations!!!

We are so attuned to hearing even some positive comment from one of the repuglicans that we'll give them a break on several more absolutely stupid statements or votes. Every now and then Graham and McCain say some words that make sense. 10%? Mostly they vote with their inconscious and their need for $$$ and power.

Don't forget, I think Ryan and Chaffetz might also be in cahoots or have some knowledge of what's going on too. As I said in another post, it was VERY naive of the republicans to not think that they were not hacked. They probably have more incriminating emails, data, etc. than the DNC.

Trump has a vendetta against the world, I know, but I believe he especially is angry at the republicans and it is his mission to bring them down along with him. I think there is video of him saying that he would not get in a foxhole with a republican-they can't be trusted. Now he has them kissing his ring....

...the investigation into Russian election interference was made public. Mitch McConnell is part of the cover-up.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/12/10/world-war-iii-democrats-and-america-vs-trump-and-russia.html

Good luck getting Republicans to agree on anything here. Mitch McConnell? Please. He’s the one who said, at a hush-hush meeting back in September where administration officials urged that bipartisan group of 12 legislators go public with concerns about Russian interference in the election, that he would not participate and that if Democrats did so, he would tell the American people this was just partisan politics.

Think that through. McConnell, according to the Post story, showed no concern about the truth of the allegations. And bear this nugget in mind: This was not Barack Obama trying to persuade him to join in this bipartisan effort. This was Lisa Monaco, the president’s counterterrorism adviser; and Jeh Johnson, the Secretary of Homeland Security secretary; and FBI Director James Comey. McConnell told Comey, in essence, to go take a jump in the lake. McConnell was interested only in party, not at all in country. That’s not treason, but it sure isn’t patriotism.

This obviously cries out for hearings and an investigation, or a few of them. If we lived in a different universe, we’d ideally have a bipartisan investigation by Congress that was honest and serious and was able to be finished or at least to reach decent conclusions before the Electoral College votes on December 19.

But that will not happen. Republicans will make the Democrats do all the lifting here and then will cry that they’re being partisan and it’s just sour grapes. (Republican Senator John Cornyn tweeted, All this 'news' of Russian hacking: it has been going on for years. Serious, but hardly news.&quot But this is a genuine crisis. The guy who got 2.8 million fewer votes to begin with, and won because he took three states by less than 1 percent may have made it over the finish line, limping as he was, with a push from Vladimir Putin.
