(58,785 posts)America's had a wakeup call, but the fight to save democracy hasn't even begun to get tough. Surely it's just a little early for leaning over and grabbing our ankles, burning our hard drives before we trash our computers, and practicing our threat-averting submissive body language?

(52,317 posts)so it will always be on life support at the worst.
it's already highly manipulated, and republicans will make it more so.
they will take away the right to vote from more americans, they will make voting more difficult, etc.

(599 posts)The Republicans won't (and can't) completely kill democracy, but they'll make it difficult to participate in. Various voter suppression tactics have proven that.

(58,706 posts)That I refuse to do. Not what the oath I took when I enlisted meant to me.
There has been successful pushback. There are still institutions in place through which the resistance can be maintained. The counter-movement is growing.
Keep the dream alive.
but so true in it's implications

(41,861 posts)Republicans who virtually have all the power in this country. Who own the voting machines, who have gerrymandered communities, and who call in the Russians to help them throw an election? Who are right now changing everything in the government to reflect their views... ?

(146,329 posts)in all those districts to their congress members. We fight back by doing solid GOTV work in districts that can be won. We fight back by keeping the pressure on every elected official.
We do those things in our own states and districts. We join our local Democratic Party organization and volunteer to to the work that needs to be done. We don't do it by complaining about things online. That does not work. What works is getting people out to vote in every single election.
We do it by staying solid in our resolve. We don't run away when we don't absolutely love some candidate. We don't abandon our candidates when one we prefer doesn't end up winning in the primaries. We don't hand the government over to the Republicans by "sending a message" through voting for a third party candidate. Those are not winning strategies. They cost us the 2016 election.
We lost in 2016. The answer is not to give up. That should be obvious. Watch the news. People are fighting back. Join them. Do it where it matters. Do it where you live and vote. You cannot change things except in your own local area. But, you can change them there by putting in the effort needed.
Join with others. Be active. Work on things that will benefit you and your neighbors. Be an activist.
Posting on DU is not activism. Activism is what you do when you're not on DU.

(9,527 posts)If enough people turn out to vote for Democrats, we win. For all all the talk about the Russian aspect, Clinton was still ahead by enough to win until the late October Comey announcement. Even then she still won the popular vote by close to 3 million and came about 80,000 votes from winning the Electoral College.

(18,124 posts)but I think while seriously damaged, our form of government will heal in time having learned valuable lessons about the racism in the RW "make ameriKKKa great again" Party, and how deep the cancer of hate has spread that has always been in the culture and fabric of american living.
I will work to try to help it survive, because just like those repubs whining about losing healthcare because of the racist triumvirate they voted into office, I prefer that the children, anti-administration people and animals of the world have a chance at living and not dying at the hands of a madman. Purely selfish reasons just like those who voted for trump. As soon as they get what they need to survive, the will get back to "making ameriKKKa great again". Guaranteed!!!!!! 1 out of 10 MIGHT see the error of their way...maybe. They are so blinded by hate and the specter of white supremacy reigning in ameriKKKa, again.
Democracy is bigger than them and while they may seemingly succeed for a while they will ultimately fail in the end. Remember the moral arm of the universe.

(5,829 posts)Montana is perfect case in point:
Montana GOP chair warns too much voter turnout favors Democrats
Rachel Maddow reports on a special election in Montana to happen in the likely event that Rep. Ryan Zinke becomes Donald Trump's Interior Secretary, and the expressed concerns by the state Republican Party chairman that easier voting favors Democratic

(37,748 posts)Six weeks into this hurricane and I'm witnessing a galvanizing of not merely Democrats, but of many demographics whose security/search for security is threatened by Trump policies.
I see Trump supporters unwilling to confirm their support for him anywhere but in anonymous internet postings and the aberrant, sub-literate dullard in a national news broadcast proud of his own ignorance.
I see protests daily... protests that include both elderly women and youthful males frustrated and angry at that little guy in the White House.
I see co-workers of mine who, until Jan. would beat their chests now avoiding eye contact after having taken down their clever little bumper-stickers from their desks.
I see the apolitical mad as hell because their disabled daughter is about to lose insurance coverage.
We will weather this storm. And we will do it together... shoulder to shoulder, eyes on tomorrow. We will do it not for ourselves, but for everyone; even for the half-witted idiots who wanted that stain in the White House in the first place.
I think it will get worse before it gets better, yet I firmly believe it will get better... and tomorrow will be all the brighter for it.
