Pence used personal email for state business and was hacked..

Vice President Mike Pence routinely used a private email account to conduct public business as governor of Indiana, at times discussing sensitive matters and homeland security issues.

Emails released to IndyStar in response to a public records request show Pence communicated via his personal AOL account with top advisers on topics ranging from security gates at the governor’s residence to the state’s response to terror attacks across the globe. In one email, Pence’s top state homeland security adviser relayed an update from the FBI regarding the arrests of several men on federal terror-related charges.

Cybersecurity experts say the emails raise concerns about whether such sensitive information was adequately protected from hackers, given that personal accounts like Pence's are typically less secure than government email accounts. In fact, Pence's personal account was hacked last summer.

With the help of some friends on Twitter, here's a list of people who have fairly recently been reachable, often with quirky handles, on their old AOL accounts:

POLITICS: David Axelrod, Jim Messina, John Weaver, Joe Trippi, Mandy Grunwald, Dick Morris (a recent defector to gmail), Frank Luntz, Ed Rollins, Guy Cecil, Tad Devine, Al Franken, Aaron Schock

MEDIA: Matt Drudge, Arianna Huffington (who was holding onto an AOL account long before AOL bought her company), David Brooks, David Corn, Robert Draper, Rick Perlstein, Ann Coulter, Tina Brown, Lawrence O'Donnell

Here's a comparison of what various free webmail providers offer:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_webmail_providers#General

AOL Mail ranks very well compared to others: unlimited storage (Gmail only gives you 15GB), attachment size up to 25MB, POP3, IMAP and SMTP support etc.

The problem with Pence using a private email account isn't the provider, it's the lack of security for government purposes and the hypocrisy.

I've already seen folks on social media retaliating to the usual AOL gibes by pointing out a number of prominent Democratic politicians who're known to have email accounts with the same provider, conveniently dodging the more important issues. But keep on giving them fodder if you want. It's all a joke, after all.

hysterical. And I'm the one who needs to get a grip? You should really try weed... or something.

I don't give 2 shits about what some troll is saying on social media. JFKs ghost could be on AOL for all I care and it still doesn't change the fact that Pence is an hypocritical imbecile. Don't see how I'm giving anyone fodder. Since I don't talk to the same assholes you do, apparently. Which brings up another point. Why are you bringing stupid ass right wing talking points here anyway?

In the days before Firefox, Netscape Navigator was the main alternative to Internet Explorer (which sucked bigly in those days), so Netscape had a decent brand image going for it.

Then, over the years, through various company acquisitions, I still have a netscape.net email address, but it's part of AIM Mail - AOL.

It's quite a decent free email system, and measures up well to similar services.

I wouldn't want to run a government department using it.

"Vice President Mike Pence continued to fight to keep secret a political white paper emailed to him while he was Indiana governor, petitioning the Indiana Supreme Court not to review a public records denial for the controversial papers.

If opened, the communications could reveal a slew of Republican political strategies that Pence and dozens of other U.S. governors devised to fight former President Barack Obama and an executive order of his concerning immigration.
....

The case stems from a public records request made in December 2014 by Indianapolis attorney William Groth, a Democrat, who was gathering information about the former Republican governor's use of outside counsel for the immigration litigation and its cost to Indiana taxpayers.
Pence produced the requested emails “but those documents included substantial redaction,” including a white paper the governor failed to produce, according to court records.
The white paper in question contains legal theories used by many governors in their decision to joinState of Texas et al v. United States of America, which challenged the Obama administration's executive order regarding immigration......"
