Native American Student Cierra Fields Says She Was Removed From Class After Refusing Pledge of AllegianceChampion for Change Cierra Fields, a student at Fort Gibson High, was also told to take alternate online course
Vincent Schilling March 3, 2017
Cierra Fields, a Fort Gibson high school student and member of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma, says she was removed from her classroom on Tuesday morning, February 28 after refusing to stand for or say the pledge of allegiance. Fields, a Champion for Change, anti-rape advocate and correspondent for ICMN, says soon after she said she would not participate, she received a verbal lashing from her teacher.
After I said I was not going to participate, my teacher raised her voice and said she refused to educate ungodly and unpatriotic students. She was angry and told me that I needed to take an online course to better understand why I needed to participate, said Fields.
After I refused to pledge to the flag, my teacher removed me from class by taking me into the hallway in direct view of some of the students. My teacher questioned me and screamed at me about how her father missed a year of her life in Vietnam and how her husband was an Afghanistan war veteran, Fields said.
Fields also said the teacher questioned Cierras potential disrespect toward her own fathers military service, a 10-year U.S. Army veteran.

(22,340 posts)Sadly, there are too many teachers that think they can make kids stand for the Pledge. I've had this discussion a lot of times. Luckily, the people I have talked to at faculty meetings were more reasonable than this woman and understood the law after it was explained to them.

And she ought to read up on the fourteen defining characteristics of fascism. Number one is the constant use of patriotic symbols, mottos, slogans, songs, and other paraphernalia.

(18,124 posts)RW ore than likely virulently racist idiot, student, hero of first degree and had no reason to stand up and pledge to a country that committed genocide against the First-american peoples. Hope some justice comes her way soon for her choice to stand up for what's right. Hell if I was a student today I would not stand on pledge and and I turn my back or take a knee with the playing of national anthem.

There have been many nutjobs who try to bait him into following their crap. He shuts them up quick.
Just like when he talks about the Confederate Flag being a traitor's flag.....

(24,259 posts)The student needs to contact the ACLU.
SCOTUS already decided years ago that students can't be coerced or forced to say the pledge. Occasionally people need to be reminded that freedom of speech includes the freedom not to speak.
Saying the pledge doesn't mean you're a patriot any more than saying you're a christian means you actually are one or saying you're Harvey makes you a giant pooka.

(7,395 posts)I'm probably more patriotic than most because of my time in Saudi fighting British kids over who won the Revolutionary War, but I do not like forced patriotism at all.
Kind of like forced religion. Demeans the religion.

(146,317 posts)She's one of those "native" Americans, you know, the ones the teacher thought were all killed off by European immigrants to North America a long, long time ago. Those "native" Americans who think they have any rights at all in this country. That teacher sure showed her student how much respect she has for the original Americans.
I suspect that teacher is about to learn a new lesson of her own. And what she learns will be at the cost of her teaching job. What a surprise she'll have!

(5,995 posts)Am sure the teacher feels she's disciplining a "mouthy" teen. This won't turn out well for any involved, but the teacher is going to be a hero to a large portion of the locals even after she loses on appeal (assuming the local SB tries to back or minimize her act).
eta: Read the link, the principal is brushing it off (big surprise), am sure more will come if the teacher refuses to apologize

(16,808 posts)by coincidence we all sat together in the corner of the classroom...a function more of alphabetical order more than seating choice.
we called ourselves the south east corner minority of homeroom 43.....
the homeroom teacher didn't make a big deal. never spotted any of us out...never reflected anything by making a fuss.
he was an older teacher who was head of the industrial arts program at the school.
although he must be like a brazillion years old now and sadly dead for some time.....thank you Mr Eberhardt.....
