Exclusive: Trump administration considering separating women, children at Mexico border

By Julia Edwards Ainsley | WASHINGTON

Women and children crossing together illegally into the United States could be separated by U.S. authorities under a proposal being considered by the Department of Homeland Security, according to three government officials.

Part of the reason for the proposal is to deter mothers from migrating to the United States with their children, said the officials, who have been briefed on the proposal.

The policy shift would allow the government to keep parents in custody while they contest deportation or wait for asylum hearings. Children would be put into protective custody with the Department of Health and Human Services, in the "least restrictive setting" until they can be taken into the care of a U.S. relative or state-sponsored guardian.

Currently, families contesting deportation or applying for asylum are generally released from detention quickly and allowed to remain in the United States until their cases are resolved. A federal appeals court ruling bars prolonged child detention.

President Donald Trump has called for ending "catch and release," in which migrants who cross illegally are freed to live in the United States while awaiting legal proceedings.

Many remember how that worked out with the Native Americans and there are still Law Suites going today against the Mormon Church regarding care and treatment of Ute Children. Remember the Catholic Church and their Indian Schools? I do,and it was not pretty as to the out comes .

It did not work and It will not work. BTW,this whole f---n Border thing is being driven by the two Border and ICE union Bosses who supported Trump.

In a few days the Trump group will say that this report, which they probably planted, was false. They hope that in the meantime, it will obviate to some degree the attention now being paid to Russia. That strategy is losing effectiveness due to the public's increasing worry about the increasingly serious Russia scandal, and because the strategy is being over used to the point that everybody can see right through their efforts to put out their own bizarre fake news.

it's not like this kind of brutality hasn't happened here before
in the slave markets, the native relocations and "Indian Schools", the internment camps of WW2...
difference is, now it's visible to us, happening here and now, not in some distant past or faraway place
we all made a huge mistake thinking it couldn't happen here again -- human nature can change over time, but it hasn't changed enough just yet. somehow going forward we need to remember this and do what we can to address its causes, not just wipe a hand across our foreheads saying "glad that's all behind us now".
if we survive, that is

Children are not complete. They are not structured like adults. They live within the crucible of a family and their health, development and ability to overcome trauma depends on the relative stability of that crucible. Being taken from your mother while in the middle of a strange place, stress, exhaustion, illness, potential abuse and a host of things changes the structures of brains and personalities. Often those changes are disastrous.

He can't. He just can't.

And absolutely heart breaking. I know kids are resilient but this sort of practice does irreparable psychological harm. This is unnecessarily cruel. The motive is profit and to whiten America. It only makes ICE's job more difficult. Not only is it inhumane, it is fiscally ineffective.
