So, when you hear the Republicans say that Obama should have focused on the Economy & not Healthcare

Remind them that ...

The rising costs to businesses providing employee insurance AFFECTS the ECONOMY.
Businesses have less money to invest and less money to hire new employees when the insurance companies 'go wild'

The cost of individuals purchasing their own insurance AFFECTS the ECONOMY.
When insurance premiums goes up, individuals have less expendable money to spend.

Without the donut hole closure the elderly would have less expendable money to spend on their necessities,
Which AFFECT the ECONOMY.

When people do NOT have insurance and get ill it AFFECTS the ECONOMY and work productivity.

When doctors and hospitals do not get re-reimbursed it AFFECTS the ECONOMY.

Etc, etc, etc.

The thing some folks don't see clearly/understand is that HEALTHCARE is a HUGE issue that does AFFECT the ECONOMY.

Inevitably they're going to say something incredibly fucking dumb, and I've learned by now that once they're in "dumbassed flightless parrot*" mode, there's no use in talking to them.

He was telling about the evils of Socialism and how the folks in Canada hate their health care. They were all dropping dead or come here for doctors, etc.

Just then a customer came in, obviously well to do, and started to talk to him. He was from Canada, so I asked him how he likes their health care. He said it was great and everyone there loved it. Wouldn't trade for our system.

The young college kid just hung his head. I told him not to believe every thing he hears. Ask people from Canada.

Canadians don't get spam email from US pharmacies about cheaper medications.
Just another reason to like their health care system.

everytime they make the claim that vis a vis health care reform, the government has taken control of 1/16 (or some percentage) of THE ECONOMY, so clearly they acknowledge that there is at least SOME linkage.

His first major act as president was signing a big economic stimulus bill, which was, of course, unanimously opposed by the Republicans.

The CBO and all other sources with any credibility measure the effect of the stimulus as the creating or saving of one to three million jobs.

It should have been bigger, and was oversold by the Obama administration, but the focus should be con comparing the economy now with where it would have been without the stimulus, not comparing it with the rosy (politically motivated) projections that the White House issued.
