In March 2014, the U.S. government sanctioned Dmitry Rogozina hardline deputy to Vladimir Putin, the head of Russias defense industry and longtime opponent of American powerin retaliation for the invasion of Crimea and eastern Ukraine. Eighteen months later, the National Rifle Association, Donald Trumps most powerful outside ally during the 2016 election, sent a delegation to Moscow that met with him.
Meeting with Rogozin, a target of U.S. sanctions, is not itself illegalas long as the two sides did no business togetherexplained Boris Zilberman, an expert on Russian sanctions at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. But, he noted, it is frowned upon and raises questions those targeted for sanctions have been engaged in conduct which is in direct opposition to U.S. national security interests.
But Rogozin is no ordinary Russian official, and his title extends far beyond being merely the chairman of a shooting club. His portfolio as deputy prime minister of Russia includes the defense industry. One issue where Rogozin seems particularly interested is cyberwarfare, which he has heralded for its first strike capability. And hes well-known in Russia for being a radicaloften taking a harder line than Putin himself.
Rogozin was the leader of the ultra-right party called Rodina, or Motherland, and famously believes in the restoration of the Russian Empire, including what he calls Russian America (i.e., Alaska).
The NRA spent $30.3 million to elect Trumpmore than even the top Trump super PAC, which spent just $20.3 million, according to OpenSecrets.
Rogozin is apparently even more right-wing than Aleksandr Dugin, a man whom I have already vilified on DU for his plans to restore the Russian Empire by destabilizing her enemies.

If we think proving this administration committed treason will matter, we are wrong. It wont.
Nothing will be done no matter what is proven. Because the people who have to do it, are the ones guilty of the treason.

(25,253 posts)Really - why didn't we see this coming? This just didn't happen overnight. Such a takeover like this had to be fomenting for years - maybe decades. It's just that the right person (useful idiot) came on to the scene. The Repugs thought they had it in Dubya. Fortunately for us a President Obama came along and put some brakes on this takeover. But all the forces of evil came together when Hillary became our nominee. They all converged and systematically took her out. I just wonder how many governmental personnel have been plotting this. This is not a conspiracy theory. We're watching it happen in real time and right now it doesn't look like we have a way to stop it. I'm afraid too much damage will have been done to our country by the time 2018 rolls around.

(21,088 posts)The mindset of the Trumpites will not be erased quickly or easily. Unless you can successfully rein in RW hate radio, de-conglomerate the media, and undo the effects of the Powell Memo and Citizens United, their attitude will continue to fester and spread. Even if you manage to do all that, it will still take another generation to undo the social damage that has been done.
History tells us that such a situation is a breeding ground for repeated rebellions and attempts to violently overthrow the government. Those efforts will have Russia's eager help. Remember, they play the long game, measured in decades rather than years.
I greatly fear that America has crossed some sort of Rubicon.
