Donald Trump is consolidating his power.

2. It's risky to assume the righteous uproar from the opposition (#TheResistance), forceful as it may be, has necessarily weakened Trump.
3. Bannon has explicitly said that the fury of the opposition is perceived as validation of success. FRICTION GIVES THEM TRACTION.
4. Here's the bitter truth: It CAN and IS happening here. @brianklaas explains how American democracy has suffered.
5. #TrumpRussia is at a fever pitch now, but could STILL fizzle. GOP leaders have abdicated their duties, cravenly covering for Trump.
6. The new #travelban has a better chance in the courts than its predecessor. Meanwhile, we're already hearing deportation horror stories.
7. The news media squandered their credibility by helping to elect Trump, so don't put your faith in them. You'll be let down if you do.
8. As I wrote recently, a BIG misconception among people accustomed to democracy is that when freedoms are curtailed, life grinds to a halt.
9. In fact, as Constitutional rights dissolve, the trappings of everyday existence continue. Life ALWAYS goes on.
10. But the liberties undergirding what used to be normal life will start crumbling. Freedoms that were taken for granted will be gone.
11. Those who sound the alarm will be scoffed at. Many Americans won't see the damage. And some will CHEER Trump as he tightens his grip.
12. What’s worse: The really unsettling stuff, the breakdown of rules and norms IS HAPPENING NOW, not at some hypothetical future point.
13. The proverbial sh*t is hitting the fan EVERY SINGLE DAY and the damage is being done. It will be exceptionally hard to undo.
14. We have to see the truth for what it is: Faith in our institutions, faith in our government, faith in reality itself is under assault.
15. None of this is to say that people should stop defending their rights and principles. But let's be clear-eyed about what's happening.

relying on democratic politicians, "spooks," courts, the press, "sane republicans," etc. is doomed to failure. our only hope is continued mass demonstrations. i know it's difficult but it is the only way. we are long overdue for our next massive march on washington. we must strike while the iron is hot. we should be aiming to beat the numbers of the women's march or sustain demonstrations for longer periods. feet in the street, people. Now!

It is not to say just give up and roll over, but this didn't start on November 8th.

We have been a slow, but STEADY slide toward authoritarian, fascism since the early 90s at least, probably the point at which Reagan was elected. It just went to DEFCON 2 with the election of 45.

Even if we could magically have a non-republican POTUS and Congress today, we have lost a LOT of ground that took decades and decades of struggle to achieve.

And, they are going to keep plowing ahead as fast and strong as they can until such time as they can't.

I'm not going to argue with your points. What I will say is we, the resistance have stopped him in his tracks at many turns. Yes, bannon says what he says.

An interview with Bernie sanders by the guardian, posted here on the du, points out that we have been thru tough times before and now is not the the time to despair, but to do more!!! Too many people will look at your kind of post and move from "getting on with it" to utter despair. This does NOT serve our cause!!

I'm going to do all I can until the 2020 election. However, if things look bad after '18 I'm going to start making preparations to leave.

Life is too short and I refuse to live in a theocratic dictatorship.

his first wife's divorce attorney, has unquestionably transferred his admiration to Putin's playbook for power consolidation by eroding democratic institutions. This same playbook was recently used in Turkey. The end results are there to be seen today. Here the writing is on the wall and the really alarming part is that Congress is complicit, as has been stated. I think this has got to be one of the continuing aims of the resistance.

I repeatedly saw Peter Daou posting misleading FP posts about Bernie during and after the primaries, so do not put much weight in his messages. That said, I will be attending People Power resistance training sponsored as a project in all 50 states today. I encourage you to consider that. You will be able to stream it, but if you can attend a meeting you can link up with like minded citizens.

Unfortunately, this is spot on.

I've seen a number of posts here talking about how the momentum is building to remove Trump from power and I'm seeing the exact opposite. I see a lot of impotent bitching and moaning and complaining and exclamations of horror.

What I don't see is that there is anyone in the Republican Party that is a patriot any longer. The game is about money and power and that is all that matters to them. Most of their constituents feel exactly the same way. As long as they are on the winning side and get to call the shots they don't care if our entire system crumbles. It all comes down to who's ox is getting gored.

And, right now it is ours. But we don't have the power and we let the entire system be rigged against us to the point that the majority no longer rules in this country.

To turn this around is going to require a mobilization of progressive voters unlike anything before in the history of the United States.

I write to John McCain twice a week begging him to put country before party - do the right thing. Be a hero. If he would lead the charge, there are other repubs who would follow. But it might split the party & they always put party first.

IF, and that's a big question mark at this point, if tRump's going to be 'removed' it will have to be by members of the military who decide they can't carry out his orders because he's a dangerous despot (which he is), or from members within the US and foreign IC who have deemed him a threat to not only the US, but its allies abroad who realize the threat Russia poses with a western partner who will enable them. It will be either a coup or an organized hit (which may not be carried out necessarily by any US member of the IC, but a co-conspirator/collaborator doing the wetwork). Note, I don't necessarily believe that any active agents/assets would have to be involved, because there are members of the IC who are not in Washington, but in far-flung locations and many may have effectively 'retired', though they are never actually retired.
