For Solace and Solidarity in the Trump Age, Liberals Turn the TV Back On

There is a new safe space for liberals in the age of President Trump: the television set.

Left-leaning MSNBC, after flailing at the end of the Obama years, has edged CNN in prime time. Stephen Colbert’s openly anti-Trump “Late Show” is beating Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight” for the first time. Bill Maher’s HBO flock has grown nearly 50 percent since last year’s presidential primaries, and “The Daily Show” has registered its best ratings since Jon Stewart left in 2015.

Traditional television, a medium considered so last century, has watched audiences drift away for the better part of a decade. Now rattled liberals are surging back, seeking catharsis, solidarity and relief.

“When Obama was in office, I felt like things were going O.K.,” Jerry Brumleve, 58, a retiree from Louisville, Ky., said last week as he stood in line for a “Daily Show” taping in Manhattan.

These days, he is a newfound devotee of Rachel Maddow of MSNBC — “She’s always talking about the Russians!” his wife, Yvonne, chimed in — and believes Mr. Stewart’s successor, Trevor Noah, has finally “hit his stride.”

I won't be joining the masses to "turn the TV back on"

It was a disgrace their double standard coverage during the election, and by their distortion, they helped propel trump into the WH.

11 days before the election when Comey sent a letter to the republicans in Congress, it was MSNBC that was the first to report that "the FBI had reopened the email investigation". THAT WAS A LIE. They then proceeded to parade every right wing politician across their screen perpetuating that LIE. A little over an hour the other networks joined suit with the same LIE.

A few days later when thing started to quiet down, Bret Baier from fox news reported "from his sources within the FBI an indictment was pending against the Clinton Foundation". THAT WAS A LIE. Again other news outlets picked up that story without hesitation.

48 hours later Bret Baier came out and said he was mistaken and no indictment was pending, and apologized for putting out incorrect information. Good ole Rachel was so impressed with Bret Baier's apology, she was gushing all over his actions, "what a courageous thing to do, everyone makes mistakes, etc. etc. etc."

On November 9th I downgraded my service so CNN, MSNBC, fox, and CNBC no longer come into my house.

Just comedy tho. Cable news still sucks. Either they miss talking points and I'm stuck yelling at the screen, or they have some bullshit story about puppies when people are being rounded up like cattle around the country.

I started watching the daily show again (hadn't since John left), then I watch SNL, Maher, Colbert, Seth Meyers, Samantha Bee, and John Oliver. Occasionally I'll watch Vice and Vice news (which should really be the paradigm for how the news should be presented on tv).

Now, they are all on board for tearing him down - and ratings are up.

What they have accomplished is an even more acute awareness that WE must distinguish fact from opinion - on M$M and "the social network" - regardless of the source.

This is the lesson we should learn. We should all be skeptical, adversarial, ethical citizens in a new, heightened world of craven, money-driven commercialism that WILL sell us just about anything.

watch Rachel and Lawrence O'Donnell and Bill Maher. On a regular basis, I watch Amy Goodman Democracy Now, she is very insightful with headlines and guests she has on her show.

Watching PBS News Hour also while it's still on, you never know with this disgusting fascist regime how long they will last, public funding is needed.

The rest of the MSNBC lineup---particularly Joe/Mika, Andrea Mitchell and Chucky Todd---can continue to kiss my ass.

Her nightly revelations about the Russian connection are too compelling to miss. I also watch Joy Reid, never stopped.
