Don't Get Over It
Obstruction by the opposition did not begin with this administration. The problem is that the country has become so divided that there is virtually no common ground. The Republican party has become the instrument of vested interests and they have marshaled the forces of racial prejudice, religious intolerance, and fear to bolster their dwindling popular support. They cannot win free and fair elections, so they have turned to voter suppression, disenfranchisement, and demagoguery to hold on to power. The "take no prisoners" and "scorched earth" politics of today is merely a continuation of what happened in the previous Democratic administration. Once that genie has been let out of the bottle, it cannot be put back.
If the Democrats do not fight back, the end of all this is going to be an American fascism just as Huey Long predicted many years ago. One need not fear loud and virulent opposition. That is the sound of a vigorous and healthy democracy. The time to be afraid is when the opposition falls silent, because then, it will be too late.
