http://www.newsweek.com/millions-educated-russians-flee-putin-russia-567930?rx=usThe rapidly climbing numbers of Russians fleeing the country in search of political freedom and economic opportunity in the West has become the greatest threat to the stability of the Russian Federation, said an Atlantic Council analyst.
According to Alina Polyakova, director of research for Europe and Eurasia at the Atlantic Council, the fact that you have this outward migration is a significant national security threat to the Russian Federation.
She said: This is the No. 1 threat to a Russian Federation that seeks to gain its foothold in the world again.
Russian President Vladimir Putins leadership ushered in an era where a revanchist Russia has clamped down on social freedoms at home in order to exert its aggression and influence on the global stage.
However, these efforts may be impacted by instability at home. Between 2000 and 2014, approximately 1.8 million Russians left the country under [Putins] watch, said Polyakova, citing official numbers from the Russian Federation. This trend has only intensified, she added.
Harsh repression of civil society, sparse economic opportunity and the lack of an independent media have contributed to this exodus. The very individuals who should be staying in Russia...to make it a great power in the economic sense, those are the individuals who are abandoning their country, said Polyakova.

(56,829 posts)scientists, engineers, inventors will go to Europe, Canada, Australia and countries in Asia now. Top candidates for grad school and beyond will be leery of coming to an unfriendly United States. I already know one guy in my town that had a very high level job here in Connecticut and he just took a job in Shanghai for a start up company there. While he's of Chinese descent, he's lived most of his life here in the US and once the school year is over, his wife and 3 kids will be joining him in Shanghai.
We already lost some scientists when W banned fetal stem cell research at the start of his term in the early 2000s, but I think Trump could trigger a much bigger exodus, as well as fewer coming here.

(12,881 posts)A big part of me doesn't want to be associated with a country that elected Donald Trump to the highest office in the land.
But I'm 6 years from retirement and my wife's grandchildren are here, so I'm staying put.

I still wonder why Americas who claim to be patriotic don't have a problem with all the amount of the real estate that is owned and continues to be sold to foreign interests. Housing is jut too damn expensive and unaffordable to our middle and lower income families and this is a huge part of the reason why. Our small businesses are also hurt more by hight rent then taxes.
