Former Pregnant Inmate Sues After Being Forced to Wear Shackles During Labor

"When you shackle a woman at her ankles, making it difficult for medical personnel to check her, you're sending a message that our primary obligation in society is not taking care of women, but to punish them needlessly and I think it's cruel and sadistic," Pratt said.

"This is not a time when a woman is thinking about escape. This is not a time when a woman is thinking about injuring anyone. This is a time when a woman is trying to get through the process of child birth with dignity and with respect for her health and the health of her child."

After giving birth the shackles were again placed on Nabors, who was serving a 12 to 30 month sentence for stealing about $250 in casino chips.

"I understand that I did break the law, I understand that," she admitted. "But that doesn't mean I should get treated unfairly. Women have babies everyday and there's certain procedures for that."

I worked in the WI correctional system with the juveniles. We had a teenager in labor and her mom was sitting with her in the hospital. She was not restrained. The officer was sitting in the hall by her room. She went to check on her and girl and mom were gone. They caught them as they were running across the parking lot. They climbed out the window unto a porch roof and jumped down 9 feet to the parking lot.

I was exactly thinking that a woman in labor wasn't going to try to escape!

What was this teen going to do, have the baby out of the hospital, naturally?

now we didn't have females ... or Juvies .... just adult males ...
if medical personnel asked us to take the shackles off we did ...
but that was usually only if the inmate had something wrong
with his feet or legs ....

2 officers (armed) one outside ..
one inside with the inmate ...
no family unless approved by the unit manager ..

but I worked with close custody (40 year plus sentence)

"Nabors said that prison guards ignored the advice of an emergency medical technician who cautioned them not to bind her ankles with the shackles.
"She [an ambulance EMT] explained to him, you can't do this because I still have to check her and he just said 'oh well' and proceeded to put the leg shackles on and went back into the facility," the former inmate recalled."

What is it with these people who think they know better than trained medical personnel. I sincerely hope there is an investigation and the guards that did this lose their jobs.

Please know that not all guards are like this - I know several and they are smart, courteous, respectful of the inmates and would never have dreamed of doing this to Nabors.

Also when I saw she received the stiff sentence for stealing $250 casino chips - knew it was Nevada - the casinos run this state and what they want they get.

I do hope Nabors prevails and sends a message that women are not just things that can be treated inhumanely at the whim of someone else.
