(22,308 posts)yesterday. Yes, this is the cool side.
The forecast here in Detroit is for highs of 89 to 93 until next Sunday when it drops all the way down to 86.
This is freaking crazy. It was 85 in March and 95 for Memorial Day. Then we had 4 days in a row above 90 to end spring and welcome the first day of summer.
I may need to move north.

I had to get something from the front porch, it was like being slapped in the face with a hot wet towel.
Took my breath away.

It's stunningly hot outside. I think it is actually record breaking. I've been out today and when ever I get out of my car I start sweating. I thought I was used to 'hot' having lived here all my life but seriously, this is insane.

(60,010 posts)I was living in Mobile at the time.
Really felt so much hotter and humid in Macon to me, I was wondering how folks could stand it.
Now we have the same weather down here in SW Ala.
Arrghh.

I went to Arizona once in the middle of summer and it was in the 100's but it didn't seem so hot to me. I even went out on horse back in jeans in the middle of the afternoon and was fine-
I used to drive through Alabama every year as a kid on our annual trip to the Redneck Riviera aka Panama City Beach. We never stopped cuz Dad liked to get there as fast as possible... I've always felt an affection for Alabama because of that.

I'm only in the house right now because I've been having internet problems and the kid from the ISP just called and asked me to check my connection speed for him so while I was in here I decided to give home, DU, a look see

(32,096 posts)That's thanks to 106 °F with 30% humidiity. It's days like this when I am happy to live on a wooded lot. The big oaks are shading the house quite well. I still dread the electric bill that will come from this week.

(193 posts)Just a matter of time before the triple digits. At least we have dry heat, but the air quality can truly suck. I'm extremely heat sensitive and I'm dying when it's in the 90s. Hope everyone is staying hydrated and safe there back east and down south

(10,103 posts)I've been hibernating in the Eaton's Centre, where there is a/c. Ate there, shopped there, sat there, and am now home. I will be turning on the a/c shortly, have the fan on. Bought heavy-duty curtains for the 8' x 15' windows at my back (which face almost directly west, which is a drag.) And, by the way, I HATE the heat. I have a niece who swears that my side of the family must be related to polar bears...since I spend more trying to survive the four summer months than I do for everything else the rest of the year!
I drink lots, bike before sunup or after sundown, spend as much time under the a/c or on the roof as possible, and try not to snap. I hurt like hell in the heat, for one thing, and I hate feeling as though I'm breathing under a wet blanket! I eat most things uncooked, try to microwave everything else, and stop making bread for four months. I wear ugly but comfortable baggy tie die dresses in the house and baggy white shirts and shorts outside.

(60,010 posts)You sound like me.
Our house had been remodeled at some point, they added a long big room to the back, mostly windows, which faces South and West. Thank god they are Anderson double paned.
I had to buy sunshades for the windows and later added thick drapes. All summer the shades are down, the drapes are closed, makes an enormous difference in cooling.
fall thru spring the view is grand, but June until Oct. we see nothing but a solid wall of green curtains.
The only thing I wear is long lightweight cool loose clothing.
I cannot imagine how women lived here in the South in the days before A/c, not to mention Scarlett O'Hara days!

(10,103 posts)Let alone velvet and those damn corsets. Gah. I'd die, seriously. and it didn't get that hot in Toronto, and we did have snow and cold temps and blizzards. We haven't seen snow this year, and it's bloody 90° in June, for crying out loud. AND I'm close to the waterfront, I have no idea what the suburbs are like.
I'm not built for global warming. It's not my thing. My idea of a summer vacation is glacier bay. When everyone else is walking around in hoodies and shoving their hands in their pockets, I'm running around in a linen blazer or short sleeves!

(60,212 posts)The usual temperature here on this day is 98 and the record is 116, so it's a lot cooler than it "should" be.
No complaints from me, however.
RebelOne
(30,947 posts)so it is probably 105 in the sun, but it feels like it is 85 degrees inside and I start to sweat in temperatures over 80. I live in a mobile home and have 2 air conditioners and 2 fans running. Fortunately, I am surrounded by huge trees. This is the most brutal summer I have experienced here in North Georgia. I grew up in South Florida, but at least there were sea breezes.

(918 posts)82 and 90. They live in Queens. I'm gonna head over there now and insist that come and stay with us. This heat is dangerous for everyone, espcially the elderly. If you're on this board and have parents or grandparents in NYC be sure that they have a place to get out of the heat.
cali
(114,904 posts)but I just had major surgery on my leg and I have a condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome on top of that which doesn't do well with heat. Yesterday was my first day home and my little house is an oven upstairs- all floor to ceiling south facing windows in the living space. My ex-husband and son took over, installed an air conditioner in my br and and a mini-fridge freezer and microwave up here. (I can't go down stairs yet). I'd be so fucked if it weren't for them and friends dropping by to help.

(51,666 posts)It's been known to hit 115F+ for days on end this time of year here. 3rd year in a row we have had these moderate temps in late spring/early summer. Of course we always pay when Sep/Oct/Nov roll around, I have seen it linger 100F+ clear up til Thanksgiving.
It's a nervewracking time of year here. Sad to see it's becoming that in so much of the country.

(46,585 posts)I have turned on the heat twice this year, once the end of May and the other the second week of June. There's an old saying that if you don't like the weather in SF, move 10 ft in any direction. LOL.
