A UNF political scientist called the lead meaningful, even as Scott, twice elected as the states Republican governor, has started past campaigns with unenviable poll results before eking out narrow wins.
Nelson, a three-term Democrat, beats out Scott 44 percent to 38 percent, with 12 percent of voters undecided.
Even though its very early in the 2018 election season, Nelsons six-point lead is meaningful, said Michael Binder, director of UNFs Public Opinion Research Laboratory. This race is going to get national attention and Rick Scotts alliance with Donald Trump will likely factor into this elections outcome next year.
Nelsons advantage seems to stem in part from a relatively favorable job approval rating among Florida voters: 42 percent approve of his job, with 28 percent disapproving. That net positive rating of 14 points is much better than Nelsons Republican counterpart, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, and President Donald Trump, who are both under water with voters. Fifty-one percent of registered voters disapprove of Trumps administration so far, with 44 percent in support.

The lower the Rethugs go, the higher Dems go.

(34,138 posts)He IS a solid Democrat and votes with the Democratic Caucus. He is also very smart and capable enough to analyze legislation for how it will affect the country and his constituents - and will not vote against those interests.

(43,209 posts)Nelson may be fairly unremarkable as a Democrat in the Senate, but he's far and away the biggest name in the state in terms of actively serving Democrats (and the only Democrat currently serving who was elected statewide.)
Of course, I never expected Scott to be re-elected as Governor, so I'm not getting complacent.
