(28,079 posts)remember how nuts the wingers went when one of the girls' hair looked a bit more natural.
On the other hand I work with a woman who goes through phases with her hair; sometimes she straightens it for a few weeks or months, sometimes not, sometimes she goes a week or more wearing a different wig everyday. She says it all depends on her mood.

A little 4 year old I know doesn't like her (white) curly-top mother's "fluffy" hair, and said, "you know you can do something about that, right?"
She doesn't watch TV, so where did she get that idea? Not from her mother or the other women in the family -- none of whom straighten their hair.

(8,380 posts)Our office manager made the decision to go natural a few years ago and she looks fantastic. She said most of the pressure she got when transitioning was from her family and friends.
Not the same thing but I decided to stop coloring my hair in July. I'd need a touch up in fewer than two weeks to hide the gray. It was a pain and expensive. The process is tedious but worth it. My male cousin, who is gray-haired (looks great) asked me what made me decide to stop. I said, "This is what 58 looks like."
So, this is what Michelle looks like.

Hair has always been so political for black women. I'm so glad the natural hair movement is here to stay.

By the way, my late mother used to have a saying about women with innate style and grace; as she said of Jackie Kennedy: "She could wear a gunny sack and make it look beautiful." That's Michelle.
I'm sorry Mom wasn't around to enjoy the Obama presidency.

She'd look gorgeous even 'a cappella'!
It's her inner beauty that shines thru.
Class personified.
A travesty that it's 180° now.
