When McConnell deprived President Obama of a vote on Garland, it was a nuclear option. The rest is fallout.

(2,108 posts)Guarantee they will try ANY maneuver they can get away with for ANY judge or justice in ANY seat.
Power grab ~ it's what they do. Not govern, not lead, but grab for power.

(19,201 posts)You're correct. They think they're entitled to run everything, and they'll use any deceitful, crooked, dishonest means to achieve that end. A few of the old guard GOPers (McCain etc.) haven't completely sold their souls to the GOP devil, but they're being systematically weeded out and replaced by card carrying lunatics that have. There isn't an ounce of empathy among the lot. It's win at all costs and full speed ahead to fascism.

(406 posts)Why the GOP is acting like they don't want to go nuclear? They don't give a crap about rules and have no problem changing them or ignoring them. Why all the rhetoric about being concerned about the possibility of using the nuclear option?
And what's the big deal about using nuclear option? Is it a one-and done thing?
Cosmocat
(14,564 posts)It is nothing officially in the rules/law, but it is very firm gentlemans agreement that lends long term balance to the senate.
The House always tends to be more erratic, but the senate, by DC standards, is the adult table.
Yes, McConnnell is a first rate POS, and most of the R senators are run of the mill GOP scumbags, but given how small it is, the handful of Rs in the senate with any glimmer of actual light in their souls really don't want want to break this particular compact.

(15,286 posts)Dems have a lot of seats to defend in 2018, but Rs have some, too. Rs like Heller, Collins, Gardner are in swingy states and they might not want to give Dem opponents another club with which they can be beat about the head and shoulders.

(530 posts)Can't we call him McDouchebag or something?
Isn't it time we started asking the question: "What, exactly, made the Senate Majority Leader decide it was worth keeping the seat open?" Did McConnell know something the rest of us weren't privy to, like maybe the Russians were working with the Trump Campaign and the traitors in his family and inner circle to deliver a coup for the GOP?

(6,186 posts)It does fit that he would be willing to steal the seat because they knew their chance would likely come in Nov 2016.
As to his outrageous argument....."That this has never happen before filling a SCOTUS set in the last year of a president's term..... that on the face is BS but maybe no seat became available. No one died (Scalia) and no one resigned (?) That is a bull*hit argument the GOP is spewing out. It didn't happen because it didn't need to happen?
NOW the democrats really need to play hardball. No more being nice guys and gals. Every time we bend over backward they laugh and say to themselves "how stupid are these democratic leaders"?
The Marquess of Queensberry died a long time ago. Stop playing as if it make you (dems) honorable. It make you stupid and us vulnerable to the crazy and crazier right wing.
I think it's time for Exodus 21:23-25
