What did he know about protecting people. He didn't protect people dying in the AIDs epidemic, the mentally ill, the unions or the poor. Did he ever protect anyone but the very wealthy? Nope.

and they should help people. The US government hasn't been doing that for a long time, and the longer the government continues to ignore the people, the less faith the people are going to have in the government.

It's a wretched cycle, and the fact is that it comes from electing people who don't believe in government to office.

...playing policeman to business and banking so that they don't play petty tyrant to their employees and swindle people out of their savings.

So despite his PR, Reagan did not protect the people, and really shouldn't wave his thumb around about First Duties.

happening to the middle class. That ole man was a nice man who was playing a president in the white house. He left office with a hugh debt and the teavanglist think he is a damn hero. What a bunch of fools. They continue to be that crock.

But I want to know what the government is protect people against. Poverty? Hunger? Homelessness? Sickness? A personal security threat? The flying spaghetti monster? All are laudable things to protect people against (sorry pastafarians) and government can protect people from these situations without running their lives.
