McConnell: Gorsuch Is Going To Be Confirmed One Way Or The Other

President Donald Trump's Supreme Court pick, Neil Gorsuch, will be confirmed this week one way or the other, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Sunday, suggesting he'll trigger the so-called nuclear option if Democrats attempt to filibuster Gorsuch.

"Judge Gorsuch is going to be confirmed," McConnell said on "Fox News Sunday." "The way in which that occurs is in the hands of the Democratic minority."

McConnell did not say directly that he would trigger the nuclear option, in which the chamber's rules would be changed to allow the Senate to cut off filibusters on Supreme Court nominations with a simple majority, instead of the current 60-vote threshold. But he said the week "will end with [Gorsuch's] confirmation" whether or not Democrats attempt to filibuster him.

Democrats say that if the filibuster remains in place, they have the votes to torpedo Gorsuch’s nomination.

“It’s highly, highly unlikely that he’ll get to 60,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

so the health of Kentuckians can improve and our country can move forward.

McConnell has been senator from Kentucky for 36 years. He has failed to uplift his state. He is the leader of the Senate, and Kentucky is leading in in poverty-one of the 10 most impoverished states.

Democrats who want us to reach out to white Trump voters need to start being more aggressive about the message. Poor states are mainly poor because they vote for McConnell's and Rands.

Incidentally McConnell's first wife is the feminist scholar, Sherrill Redmon. If only she had had the political career.

When it swings back to us again (and looking more and more like that will be sooner than later), they are the ones who obstruct everything with the filibuster. Hell they were the first ones to escalate the use of it back in the 70's, and every time the next Democratic Party wave came in and just tried to keep the status, the next wave of Republican minority would come in and double the use of it. Hell, just look at this chart, and it doesn't even capture the biggest years of 2013-2016!

Looks to me like they have a hell of a lot more to lose by doing away with it than we do.

Maybe next round we'll be able to just go ahead.. dump the rumpcare, and put in single payer right out of the starting gate without having to kiss the asses of DINO's, and the Lieberman's out there to do so.

31. 60 to invoke cloture.
Tue Apr 4, 2017, 07:34 PM
Apr 2017

I.e., to "end debate" (filibuster). That's why Schumer has indicated that he had 41 votes to their (potential) 59 meaning they wouldn't be able to invoke cloture.

Thus the idea of Turtle invoking the nuclear option and calling a vote to change the rule to then install Gorsuch with 51 votes (assuming they have that).

The Majority Leader can proclaim that (which the OP indicated). This was as a result of the last rules change in 2013.

Tue Apr 4, 2017, 07:49 PM

that says this (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10141745992) -

<...>

At that point, McConnell will turn to the nuclear option by essentially declaring from the Senate floor that from now on filibusters of Supreme Court nominees can be stopped with 51 votes not 60, as has been the case for decades.

McConnell's declaration would then be enforced by a roll call vote when 51 votes are needed to create the new Senate precedent. Vice President Mike Pence will be standing by to break a tie if not all 52 Republicans back the nuclear option, which is possible.

Someone posted in my LBN thread that Graham would probably go along with the nuclear option so I floated Hatch (only because he has been in there so long despite having become a born-again teabagger when Lee ousted Bennett in his state).

McCain might vote against the rules change though. Flake seems to be more fiscal-focused and is still junior in the Senate so I don't think he'll buck Turtle. Paul is a lot of talk and little action and probably won't buck Turtle either (who is his KY colleague too).
