So, I've been going through The Federalists Papers and other writings from that time period.

I find it interesting how many of the same things we debate and discuss now were top on their minds back then. I also find it interesting how so many conservatives claim that these writings support their backassward views, but really it seems they are stating the opposite in a lot of cases. I need go back through and take some notes for future use when someone says something stupid.

They lived in a preindustrialist, agrarian society. They were vastly wealthier than the British peers, but didn't have political power. That is a recipe for a successful revolution.

But I don't think you can apply big L Liberalism to them. That came a bit later.
