I think Donald Trump became president of the United States last night, declared Fareed Zakaria on CNN, after firing of 59 missiles at a Syrian military airfield late Thursday night. (His words sounded familiar, since CNNs Van Jones made a nearly identical pronouncement after Trumps first address to Congress.)
On Syria attack, Trumps heart came first, read a New York Times headline.
President Trump has done the right thing and I salute him for it, wrote the Wall Street Journals Bret Stephens a frequent Trump critic and Pulitzer Prize-winning conservative columnist. He added: Now destroy the Assad regime for good.
Brian Williams, on MSNBC, seemed mesmerized by the images of the strikes provided by the Pentagon. He used the word beautiful three times and alluded to a Leonard Cohen lyric I am guided by the beauty of our weapons without apparent irony.

People who go orgasmic over missiles, bombs and war have something seriously wrong with them.

They fucking STILL don't get it.

(9,512 posts)the media IS the enemy of the people. as a whole they are the chief instruments of propagandizing, especially, but not exclusively, the extremely gullible american people. Sometimes even relatively smart people succumb.

(15,238 posts)Shooting, stabbing, gassing, pummeling, blowing up something in both defense and righteous anger gives Homo Sapiens the warm fuzzies. The villains among murderous apes provide much entertainment in fantasy and reality. Even when you know what they are (such as Trump) there is that ape fascination at violence.

Who knew Mr Zakana had the authority to launch missiles?
But kudos to the WaPo and Margaret Sullivan for not joining in the adulation.

(23,105 posts)ABC is the only major news outlet that really went with the drumpf told Russia ahead of time story. I heard it referenced once very briefly last night on CNN, but only once and it was just a mention of asking why is Russia reacting so strongly when we let them know in plenty of time to move anything important and we didn't bomb the runways so Russia could still fly sorties. That fact right there of not bombing the runways shows that this is a fake flag operation, bombing just the hangers in one, repeat, one airfield after giving notice that we were bombing that exact place. Nope, this is just a Pootie drumpf show to sideline the real investigation into collusion

(60,015 posts)the military guest they had - "it's not likely that there was any runway damage with the numbers and types of missiles"
15 minutes later - Brian Williams - "the cratered runways"
So breathlessly exciting for him. get out the handkerchief. mop the brow.
It is the need to sensationalize - and also the way that the media swings nationalistic and cheerleading in this type of situation. Since I've not watched TV in 10 years, I found it utterly bizarre but sadly deja vu of the previous blunderwars

(81,310 posts)I remember working at one of the local TV news departments as a writer/segment producer. All kinds of news, that one night. But guess what we led with? An apartment house fire at a building that was at most three stories tall. Because we had the video. Video! Of Flames! Burning! Burning Building! FLAMES! OOOOhhh - whaddo we see?
I once posted here about the three main lessons I learned, on the job, as I started getting into news, professionally. Basic questions you should ask yourself as a reporter, when covering a story, or camera crew, or editor, or producer of the newscast that night:
#1: What happened? Learned that as an intern at a big local full-service AM station that had a large news department.
#2: Who cares? Learned that as a just-hired weekend anchor on a big local FM rock station.
#3: What do we see? Learned that as a writer/segment producer at the local TV station. Visuals-R-Us. Pictures. What are the PICTURES?

(32,707 posts)Because with all the evidence of collusion with Russia, anyone could see a wag the dog scenario coming from a mile away. Hell, Trump himself described it in his tweets.
So now we have a clearly ineffective missile strike, and a (fake?) beef with Russia? Now what? Is trump absolved now? Will the investigations continue?

(14,167 posts)I'll admit, I had never really paid much attention to him. I typically think that most "nightly news" anchors are just script readers anyway. But listening to him.... I had to resist the urge to change the channel because Rachel was ALSO there, and I wanted to hear what Rachel had to say. But that guy is genuinely dumb. Twice I heard him say the Syrian airport was "cratered." Twice different guests that came on said the airway was likely not cratered. But he couldn't stop insisting the airport was cratered by the missiles.
