Dan Rather hits journalists who called Trump 'presidential' after Syria missile strike
By Brooke Seipel - 04/07/17 08:51 PM EDT
Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather spoke out about President Trump's missile strike in Syria on Friday, critical of media figures who were quick to say that the strike was a presidential move.
"The number of members of the press who have lauded the actions last night as 'presidential' is concerning," Rather said in a Facebook post.
"War must never be considered a public relations operation. It is not a way for an Administration to gain a narrative," Rather continued. "It is a step into a dangerous unknown and its full impact is impossible to predict, especially in the immediate wake of the first strike."
Rather's post came after several media figures, including CNN host Fareed Zakaria said Trumps missile strike in Syria shows him displaying the same qualities as Americas past leaders.

(111,102 posts)They had no evidence that Syria dropped the gas or even what type of gas it was? They didn't take the time to find out. It was an impulsive reaction by all sides.

PatSeg
(47,501 posts)with it all. Then the media becomes critical of military operations. How quickly they forget the war fatigue of Iraq and Afghanistan, conflicts that never really ended. I'm sure there is plenty of "glamour" in those countries, but I guess that is old glamour now.

It is what I call 'the Rush Limbaugh effect'.
Pay someone a whole bunch of money, and they will say EXACTLY what you want them to say.
Your choice (as the media personality) is to toe the line, or accept that they're gonna ruin your life.
This is why TV personalities can always be counted on to fawn over war. It's why we need a news media not dependent on, or influenced by advertising.

(2,270 posts)....... it was the military-industrial-scientific complex. (I just finished a Biography of his). A very wise president, not regarded highly enough these days. There's no way he could be elected in these times though. An passage from the speech :
Akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our industrial-military posture, has been the technological revolution during recent decades.
In this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. A steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the Federal government.
Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers.
The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present
and is gravely to be regarded.
Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientifictechnological elite.
It is the task of statesmanship to mold, to balance, and to integrate these and other forces, new and old, within the principles of our democratic system -- ever aiming toward the supreme goals of our free society.

The media encouraging him is lethal. Do they forget that this is the spoiled child who could mindlessly start WW3?

The MSM are just dying to have any excuse to go back to the way things were..when both parties were forced into boxes of being equally good and equally bad. Where they could divide stories up so that one day it was Democrats being bad and the next it was Republicans. And then have on reps where the Republican gets to yell over everyone else with BS, and the host just smiles, ignorant of the facts, and ends the show with a chuckle and a "who knows who is in the right here?"
