220 Cities Losing All Passenger Train Service per Trump Elimination of all Federal Funding for Amtra

SOURCE: NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF RAILROAD PASSENGERS (NARP) APR 4, 2017

http://www.masstransitmag.com/press_release/12322126/220-cities-losing-all-passenger-train-service-per-trump-elimination-of-all-federal-funding-for-amtraks-national-network-trains

SNIP.............

The National Association of Rail Passengers denounced the budget outline released by the Trump Administration, which slashes investment in transportation infrastructure. These cuts to Amtrak, transit, and commuter rail programs, and even air service to rural towns, would not only cost construction and manufacturing jobs, but place a disproportionate amount of pain on rural and working class communities.

“It’s ironic that President Trump’s first budget proposal undermines the very communities whose economic hardship and sense of isolation from the rest of the country helped propel him into office,” said NARP President Jim Mathews. “These working class communities — many of them located in the Midwest and the South — were tired of being treated like ‘flyover country.’ But by proposing the elimination of Amtrak’s long distance trains, the Trump Administration does them one worse, cutting a vital service that connects these small town economies to the rest of the U.S. These hard working, small town Americans don’t have airports or Uber to turn to; they depend on these trains.”

"What’s more, these proposed cuts come as President Trump continues to promise that our tax dollars will be invested in rebuilding America's infrastructure,” continued Mathews. “Instead, we have seen an all-out assault on any project — public and private — that would advance passenger rail. These cuts and delays are costing the U.S. thousands of good-paying construction and manufacturing jobs in America's heartland at this very moment."

Mathews was referring to the decision by Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to indefinitely suspend a grant that would allow California to proceed with a commuter rail electrification project. Caltrain, the agency overseeing the project, estimates the project would create 9,600 total direct and indirect jobs. The delay also threatens the construction of a new railcar assembly plant planned for Salt Lake City, which would generate sustainable, family-wage jobs for 550 employees.

Trump knows he can take whatever he wants from these people--because they're the True Believers who already fell for the Con. If either he, or they, cared about their well-being, his ass would NOT be president.

to rail service that might be developed in future. Although federal funding for Amtrak is being cut, "200 communities" aren't losing anything they have now.

In any case, here's a NY Times article in its usual restrained fashion on the broader subject of Rump's seeming abandonment of infrastructure campaign promises.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/05/business/dealbook/bridge-rail-infrastructure-trump.html?_r=0

While this is happening, the latest Gallop polling on Trump's previous PROMISES:

Republicans and Democrats strongly endorse family leave 81%, infrastructure 76%
More disagree than agree with border wall proposal, cutting federal regulations

As to WHY this is happening, just look to the anti-tax billionaires at war with the American people. THEY carefully created the hard right's otherwise-astonishing antipathy to rail projects--because they cannot happen without government funding, a lot of it. For many on the backwards right, which is to say for many of the eventual victims of this current policy resisting rail projects to their communities has become tied up with religion and morality.

Either we have to drive, find a bus route, or we have to fly and a lot of us won't be able to fly because of the ridiculous hoops we have to go through for an 'enhanced' driver's license. A passport is not adequate identification. I had one.

This is now officially a totalitarian country.

and that's about as far as I got before I said fuck it and got the cheap license.

I might go back later to get the enhanced one if I dig up all that damned paper, or I might just wait for the law to change. It has to. There were a lot of very angry people at the DMV.

Insert sarcasm tag here.

Seriously... Axe routes like the Crescent? So no passenger trains south of Charlotte, NC? (NC funds two trains, one Charlotte-> Raleigh and one Charlotte->Washington DC).

This makes British Rail look like a passenger transit aficionados' wet dream.

If one has to privatize Amtrak, I hope they find someone like Richard Branson. At least he knows how to run a railway.

Almost all the track belongs to private railroads, and Amtrak pays them a fee to use their lines. (The Northeast Corridor line used by Amtrak between Washington Union Station and Boston South Station is Amtrak property.) Not sure who owns the stations.

We're already behind most of the other First World countries in public transportation, health care, education, and other things. Now the brakes have been hit, all so we can suck money out of our economy to give to the wealthy and to corporations.

not enough people using them. So I get that. But most other First World countries have a well developed public transportation system, and the super fast rails between big metro areas. We are far behind, with no plans to get up to speed.
