Recount: Dem wins Wisconsin Senate recall

Associated Press

12:28 p.m. CDT, July 2, 2012
Recount results released today show Democrat John Lehman defeated incumbent Republican Van Wanggaard in last month's state Senate recall races, moving Democrats closer to seizing control of the chamber.

The official canvas after the June 5 elections showed Lehman leading Wanggaard by 834 votes out of nearly 72,000 ballots cast in Racine County's 21st Senate District — a victory that would give Democrats a one-seat majority in the Senate. Wanggaard, however, refused to concede and demanded the recount.

The final tally from the Racine County clerk's office Monday showed Lehman winning by 819 votes, with the Democrat tallying 36,358 votes to Wanggaard's 35,539.

The results are good news for Democrats, but the party doesn't yet have control of the Senate. State law calls for the Government Accountability Board to wait five business days before it can certify the results and declare Lehman the official winner.

Wanggaard said in a statement immediately after the recall results were released that he would take the a few days to consider his next move.

Perhaps this will give an opportunity to stop the madness. But as I understand it, the November elections could usher in another slate of Koch-approved candidates.

Wanggard is considering his options??? Really???

Concede already, buddy. Can you imagine the outrage if this had gone the other way? The demands for Lehman to concede would have begun before the polls closed. If he had asked for a recount, he would have been castigated for wasting time and money. And if after the recount the result remained the same and he responded by saying he was "considering his options" heads would have exploded.

Forgive me if I find all of this Republican bullying and obnoxious behavior completely ridiculous.

What next move? Why is there always a next move from these guys despite seeing the will of the people carried out? Why not make the next move a call to the Democratic winner to congratulate him instead of trying to cook some new Rovian scheme?

After all, they haven't really conceded Roe v Wade yet. That's 40 years.

Still fighting Social Security. 75 years.

I suppose one could admire their tenacity, but I wish they'd direct it toward better causes.

I'm tired of DEMS conceding prematurely in federal, state and even local elections. In Wisconsin, Barrett / Walker would be my last example.

So here is our new rule for concession. We will not concede 1 minute, 1 hour or 1 day sooner that the last republican conceded. So in a state race Wanggaard would set the standard. So if it take 30 days, 40 days, 50 days whatever.

Give notice now in the next state race WE WILL NOT CONCEDE FOR the number of "Wanggaard days".

So every new republican hold out would reset the standard. FUCK-em let them bitch, whine, threaten, sue whatever FUCK-em.

...when he tried to strike a (fake-ass) conciliatory tone after winning the recall election.

Interesting fact: Lehman was a "selective objector" during the Vietnam war: http://www.wisconsinreporter.com/lehmans-war-wi-senate-candidate-still-fighting-vietnam-war-record

Standing in the induction line, he declined to step forward to serve, refused induction and went home.

Later, Lehman was indicted in federal court. In 1971, he was found guilty of refusing induction, he appealed. His appeal was denied, and in August 1972, right around his 27th birthday, he reported to a federal marshal and began a 90-day jail sentence in Waukesha County jail.

After that, Lehman did 21 months of hospital work, as a janitor and surgical clerk, as part of his sentence.

In 1975, he received a pardon — from President Gerald Ford. The new president was in a forgiving mood then.

I'm okay to be represented by him once again.
