I'm legitimately torn. On one hand, I support anything that functions as a carbon tax (recognizing that a gas tax is much narrower) in the sense that it would help incentivize people to buy more fuel efficient vehicles and use less fuel whenever possible.
On the other hand, it's regressive taxation at its worst. High gas taxed disproportionately affects people struggling to get by, especially people who need to drive long distances to get to work. It's especially egregious in a state like New Jersey in that Christie has spent 7 years trying to cut taxes for the highest earners and wealthiest corporations, and when faced with a budget shortfall, only agreed to higher taxes that would have the little to no effect on those constituencies.
I'm not trying to start a flame war, so please keep the discussion civil.

(24,764 posts)I don't think I could handle a higher tax burden, especially that I'm on a fixed income.
One other problem that hasn't been mentioned: new fuel efficient vehicles become more expensive and used ones hard to find when gas prices go up.

(2,559 posts)I'm not so concerned about the gas/diesel tax hike.
However I'm not a fan of the vehicle registration fee hike.
1) Registration fees are really taxes, but are classified as fees, so they are not tax deductible, although they should be.
2) California vehicle registration fees have already risen at least 300% over the past two decades.
3) It is appropriate to hike registration fees on electric car owners, since they pay no gas tax. However, this may just be a prelude to taxing all vehicles on miles driven per year, in addition to the already jacked up gas and registration costs.
4) Where the HELL has all the money from existing gas and registration taxes gone? To local police depts and the highway patrol? They sure don't seem to be getting used to fix our roads.
5) What's orange and sleeps six? Answer: A Caltrans truck.

(6,278 posts)It's been eons since they were last raised and Pence's successor is actively pushing for it. Unfortunately he also wants to charge EV owners $150/year, which far exceeds the gas tax for a comparable vehicle.
