Police say they've found thief who stole Cobb Co elections machines

won't release suspect info; say machines in landfill somewhere.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. - Cobb County police have arrested a suspect accused of stealing polling equipment.

The four machines were stolen on Saturday from a car parked at the Kroger on Canton Road in Cobb County.

The so-called ExpressPoll machines were the computers poll workers used to check-in voters, and check those off who cast ballots for the Piedmont Road precinct in Marietta.

The computers contain accessible voter information including names, addresses and driver’s license numbers.

Detectives served a search warrant around 1 a.m. Wednesday at a home in Clayton County, where they recovered a cell phone that was also stolen from the car.

After talking with the suspect and several additional accomplices, officers determined that the election equipment was deemed useless by the alleged thieves and tossed into a trash dumpster over the weekend.

Cobb makes arrest in stolen voting equipment — which is in a landfill

.....

“It was a random theft and the suspect had no idea what the equipment was,” said Sheri Kell, Cobb spokeswoman.

Fingerprints from the vehicle that was broken into matched 18-year-old Kareem Riley, who was arrested off Riverdale Road in College Park about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

The ExpressPoll unit stolen could not have been used to fraudulently vote, Cobb elections director Janine Eveler assured ahead of the election.

The equipment was used to check in voters at the polls and includes drivers’ license numbers, addresses and other data — not Social Security numbers.
