Suppose you are a woman thinking about running for office,

and you've been involved in local politics for a while, and have a good idea of what you can contribute and what your vision is. Maybe you've even started to raise some money.

But your husband/partner/father/brother/son decides he needs to wave his arms at you and share his opinion:

"It is not good enough for somebody to say, 'I'm a woman, vote for me.' That is not good enough."

How would you react? Would you say, "Oh, thanks, hubby! I'm so glad you pointed that out!"

Or would you feel more like:

P.S. None of the men in my family would say something that insulting. But we all know people like that, right? And they even consider themselves to be progressive. . . .

"Do you really believe that being a woman is the entirety of my political persona? Because it certainly is not! If you had been paying any attention at all to what I've been doing thus far in my political career, then you would understand that I am for _________ and _______ and _______ . "

Yeah, I'd feel like punching them, but I'd try to show some restraint.

I raised my sons better than that and my husband of 30+ years started off well and learned on the job, as it were.

The issues matter, gender does not. Hubby/boyfriend/son/uncle/grandparent should be ignored.

that long and think all you had to offer was being "a woman".

I'd wonder what they were afraid of?

"You are absolutely right.....

that would be as baseless and illogical
as it would be for my (male) opponent to say
'Vote for me. I am not a woman.'

I am so glad we can agree that Gender should Never be a sufficient platform."

Because there aren't any evil enough to express my rage at the guy you describe.

Maybe he wouldn't be much of a male anymore after I get through with him!
