North Korea said Sunday that its military could sink a U.S. aircraft carrier that President Trump is sending to the region “with a single strike,” according to Reuters.

“Our revolutionary forces are combat-ready to sink a U.S. nuclear powered aircraft carrier with a single strike,” North Korea's ruling Workers’ Party newspaper said in a commentary, the news service reported.

The Rodong Sinmun commentary reportedly compared the USS Carl Vinson to a “gross animal.”

The USS Carl Vinson and Japanese navy ships are currently conducted exercises in the Philippine Sea.

Vice President Mike Pence said on Saturday the aircraft carrier would arrive in the waters off the Korean Peninsula "within days,” Reuters noted.

The developments come amid heightened tensions in the region as the reclusive country conducts missile and nuclear tests and threatens its neighbors.

South Korea went on heightened alert Friday, with officials are expected to meet with representatives from the U.S. and Japan this week.

in a single strike, that is "interesting".

A carrier functions within a strike group. It is essentially a base in the middle of a mobile, militarized country complete with aircraft, ships, a sub, and all manner of defenses.

It will be during the middle of war games, so the probable method would be to have a sleeper cell commandeer the US sub and to fire on their own carrier. Time to start vetting our own military.

Despite it's size, the Vinson is a small object in a large sea. North Korea has not demonstrated that any of its armaments can be targeted all that precisely, nor does it seem that they have a nuclear weapon that can be delivered by a missile.

There is no question about the vulnerability of a carrier, if an opponent is willing to spend a nuclear weapon on that target. Other than that, though, it would take a very lucky shot to sink a carrier with one strike. Our carriers are well-equipped to ward off most missile attacks, assuming that NK could even manage to successfully launch the one they're thinking about.

Dream on, Kim Jong Un. It ain't happening.
