This is my friend, Byron. He was in my wedding. We've been friends since fifth grade. Byron, being a Florida guy, has always been pretty right-wing, but we're besties so we get along. About halfway through the Obama admin, Byron stopped being GOP. He liked what Obama was doing, and he couldn't stand the obstructionist GOP. He's an engineer, a smart guy. A couple of weeks ago I got a call from Byron, wanted to meet up in DC for the Science March. Here's a pic of him and his son.
Really, there is hope. Byron was as right-wing as anyone I've ever known. He's a gun-totin' Florida boy, but even Byron got fed up. So yeah, there is hope.

(20,876 posts)and yeah, I dumped my "best friend".
I could no longer listen to her racist hatred and her thoughts so yep, after the sElection, I have not contacted her and her husband is even worse and hates people that are not Christians (as if he is one himself!).
Take your GOP shit and shove it is where I am at with anyone that voted for tRump and if you can stand it well, good luck as you need it.

(5,528 posts)He is involved in the Search and Rescue program that I work with. We are Structural Engineers accompanying the search teams for advice on stability, secondary collapse, shoring, etc. Years ago we were on the same team in South Florida before he moved upstate.
Glad to see he has seen the light.
Wow, its a small world.

(1 post)Hey StS, how you doing?
I dropped my GOP registration 20 years ago but Rob is generally right.
And I didn't just see the light, I invented it!
I think I'm talking to JC?

JC here. You've discovered my secret life as a life-long progressive. Not always the most prevalent mindset in the Engineering world but I think it is catching on. The more Conservatives demonize science and logic, the more Engineers are coming to the light side.
Damn, it's a small world.
Welcome aboard

(5,801 posts)Really, any American who is reality based and willing to listen to facts--although unlikely under those circumstances to vote GOPee in the first place--should be led by objective reality to come to the same conclusion. That so many instead cling to demonstrably false beliefs indicates how successful the pukes are in framing the narrative and appealing to the non-logical aspects of the minds of their adherents. faux and flush have indeed brainwashed a significant portion of the nation.
One of the things I tell pukes is that if their policies--for example, raygun's trickle down--worked, I would readily have acknowledged same and become a believer in raygonomics. Instead, we have decades of well-documented evidence that TD benefits only the wealthy (as it was designed to do). But the larger point--show me that your policies work and I will acknowledge same; when they fail, you should face reality and do likewise--holds.
But, unfortunately, guys like the subject of this story are the exception, not the rule. The minds of most are too far gone.

(31,464 posts)We sparred during the Bush years. He didn't like me disparaging W. But he is a scientist. He saw the evidence. And now he understands that he was mistaken, and he's attending a march in Washington. There are intelligent people in this world.
