Dean said "I have experience in this matter. It's a white house cover-up".

(6,916 posts)Nixon had Dean run the coverup.
Nixon later was trying to set up Dean as the fall guy. Dean figured it out and turned state's evidence. Got out with less than a year in jail, in the end.
Dean's recent books on authoritarianism in the GOP are must reads. Dean is (now) a patriot.
Wounded Bear
(58,670 posts)but in the end, he did flip and turn patriot.

(15,242 posts)In my opinion Trump has no ideology and is not a Conservative. He does match Republicans like them Trump is devoid of a conscience. John Dean continues to have insight into the monsters surrounding us. I loaned that book out (paid full price) did not get it back and since then have bought two copies as loaners from the bargain racks.

(60,074 posts)"Authoritarianism is something authoritarian followers and authoritarian leaders cook up between themselves. It happens when the followers submit too much to the leaders, trust them too much, and give them too much leeway to do whatever they want--which often is something undemocratic, tyrannical and brutal. In my day, authoritarian fascist and authoritarian communist dictatorships posed the biggest threats to democracies, and eventually lost to them in wars both hot and cold. But authoritarianism itself has not disappeared, and I=m going to present the case in this book that the greatest threat to American democracy today arises from a militant authoritarianism that has become a cancer upon the nation."

(38,436 posts)If this is true, then war is coming. Not because it is necessary for the United States, but because it would be necessary for Trump. I sure hope Trump does not go there. Others can list the reasons. I cannot.

(15,242 posts)My Father devout Republican worked on Trump properties in NYC in the early 90's. He despised Trump for stiffing contractors at the time and would throw out there it was because Trump was a Democrat. Trump will not start a war unless it is to his personal financial benefit or a distraction from his crimes.

(13,776 posts)It is a very readable academic study of authoritarian beliefs and behavior. When I read it, i began to understand how this entire belief system works and it explained so much about what we've seen happen over the years about the Republicans moving every more right-wing and the Democrats being pulled away from the left and toward the center.
I highly recommend both "Conservatives Without Conscience" and "The Authoritarians".

(4,835 posts)That is the exchange I was talking about, and Jason Miller is 'the weaselly one' to whom I was referring.
I saw another one of Trump's campaign morons (financial adviser) spouting some kind of 'tax cuts stimulating the economy' nonsense, and some other guy called him on his bullshit. This disaster would come to an end sooner if things like that were allowed to happen once in a while.

(40,416 posts)The reportage here is on target. Something is rotten at the core. Listen to Carl Bernstein, David Frum, and John Dean in the coming days. They seem to be aligned on this, which has to be a good thing.

(51,129 posts)There is so much already, but the distractions are too many too.
But this particular report, at least two Trump's on recordings, is new. I'm not finding much more, but Palmer Report ran with it and is is propagating from there extensively. Say what you will about Palmer, he gets tweeted a lot.

(90,714 posts)...the Mad King is yanked off the stage, even most of the guys in MAGA hats should feel some relief.
What's more intriguing is what Nikki Haley is up to. Who's giving her direction for her role at the UN? There's some indication she's making it up for herself. Further, who initiated that upcoming trip to the White House for the entire UN Security Council? Again, I got the impression from today's talking heads that Nikki is initiating this. She can't possibly believe, by now, that a lunchtime conversation with DTs will do anything to make him more intelligent. But it sure makes her look ... Vice Presidential, at a minimum.

The depth and breadth of this corruption is far-reaching...explains why FBI investigations are so lengthy too. I want this to be over, too, but better right than fast. Unless Trump blows us up first. I just hope our military is ready to step in if Trump feels backed into a corner.
