There was a time when we, as Americans, looked forward to hearing from Barack Obama, the ultimate adult in the room. His intelligence dazzled us, his eloquence stirred us; his grasp of foreign and domestic affairs was invariably communicated with style and grace, and an ability to help us understand even the most complex issues with ease.
Today was a painful reminder of how far we have strayed from the idea that the holder of our highest office should be a man of consequence, a man whose every word is worthwhile, a man whose every thought is worthy of serious consideration.
Instead, we now have a bloviating Idiot in charge of our country, a man whose every utterance is as meaningless as it is incoherent, a man who is still more concerned with his inauguration numbers than the welfare of the citizens he allegedly represents, a man whose tweets are as nonsensical as his public statements.
Thanks to the GOP, the man currently occupying the Oval Office is an incompetent, mentally-unhinged embarrassment. He has yet to say anything that makes sense; he has yet to make a single public statement that doesnt require a gibberish-to-English translation. He has yet to actually accomplish anything for the betterment of American citizens anywhere, at any time, in any way.
Our allies have been insulted, and even accused of assisting in illegally tapping the wires (sic) of a paranoid madman, and the global community literally questions not only the sanity of our Commander-in-Chief, but the sanity of the country that elected him.
Gone are the days of a president who comported himself on the world stage as a man of substance, worthy of admiration and respect as we watch a self-absorbed buffoon perform like the reality star of TV shows no one with an ounce of self-respect would ever admit to actually watching.
We have gone from a President who inspired thought-provoking discussions about science and research that could lead to the eradication of disease and the rescue of our plant via sound environmental policies to a pResident who doesnt see any value in anything that doesnt result in money in his own pocket.
We have gone from a President who addressed ALL of us regardless of political affiliation as his fellow Americans to a so-called pResident who repeatedly calls those who didnt vote for him hateful losers.
We have gone from having a President the world reveres to a pResident the world reviles.
No matter who the Republicans could have elected to lead them, all would have fallen short of matching the Democrats choice of Barack Obama. To have gone to the extreme opposite by placing an ignorant, misogynistic, stupider-than-fuck bigoted racist in the White House says everything about the GOP you always suspected but never wanted to know. But now you do know, and there is no turning back from what they have done.
The next time someone says both parties are the same is the next time some mindless jerk without a functioning brain has spoken. The next time someone says that voting Third Party is the way to get what you want is the next time you've been duped into voting a Republican into office.
We as a nation have gone from the sublime to the utterly ridiculous - and as ridiculous as it now apparently is, it is no longer a laughing matter - nor has it ever been.

I may be wrong, and I sure hope I am. But somehow I suspect that we didn't put our backs into electing Madame Secretary and so we got this buffoon instead.
And you're so right.......it has never been, and never will be, a laughing matter.

(24,777 posts)I can't wrap my mind around the truth you speak here. I think we will only be able to truly understand and articulate what happened through the lens of time.
It kills me so much.

But about this:
It wasn't JUST the GOP that foisted Trump upon us all. That is the saddest truth of all.

(2,651 posts)She says, " He has yet to actually accomplish anything for the betterment of American citizens anywhere, at any time, in any way. "
That same statement can be used to describe the entire GOTP. They have done nothing that could be construed by any sane person to be beneficial to the average American.
And yet people still vote for them!?!?
