I was 11 years old so stupidity was a condition of life at the time.

I found some bullets lying in the street so I took them home and got out a hammer.
I laid a 2X4 on the ground in front of one of the bullets and hit the end of the case with the hammer.

==BANG!!!==

It went off.
I picked up the 2X4 and inspected it.
Hmm. No hole. It must have spun around and shot off in some other direction.

I put the 2X4 back on the ground and lined up another bullet.

I am lucky to be alive.
Never did manage to shoot the board and I was lucky it didn't hit my dad's tire that was right next to it.

Without a barrel the bullet cannot gain the velocity required to kill you. The case actually becomes more dangerous as it can throw off metal shards.

So we carried it home instead. Walked into the kitchen and sat it down on the kitchen table in front of my Dad (ex-Marine and ex-firefighter at a weapons manufacturing plant). He grabbed it and ran outside. Locked us in the house and called the nearby naval base. They wrapped it in duct tape and shoved it in a bomb-resistant box. Promised they would send me a dud.
