How do you know if what you see is something worth saying something about, and not a waste of time for the cops? I have a neighbor who was wearing an ankle bracelet when he moved in (I noticed as he was wearing shorts). We encountered each other one day on the sidewalk, and we introduced ourselves. Naturally I googled him, and found out he is apparently a repeat drunk driver.
The ankle bracelet came off after a couple months, and he then began having a lot of visitors knocking on his door. They have to pass my living room window to get to his door, but any interaction at his door is out of my sight and hearing. Some days no one shows up, and other days there are people knocking on his door from 5 A.M. to past midnight. Sometimes they knock on my door by mistake looking for this man.
Whatever the interaction is that takes place usually lasts only a few minutes, and rarely does the visitor enter the apartment. Sometimes the visitor looks like your average person, male or female, under 30 -35. Sometimes they appear to be street people, poorly dressed and carrying their gear, back packs, etc.
He also appears to have some connection with several other residents living in other apartments in the complex.
Other than the frequent visitors knocking on his door for some kind of short interaction I have no proof of any wrong doing. Just suspicion. If he is involved with some illegal activity Id fear him or his friends finding out I said something and seeking revenge.
Recently there was a shooting in our complexs parking lot and a policeman knocked on my door to ask if Id heard anything. (I hadnt) The next day this neighbor commented to me that he noticed a cop knocked on my door, and what did he want.
Any suggestions? Again, I have no proof of illegal activity.
I'd probably try to ignore it but I'm tired of people knocking on my door thinking it's his apartment (which always happens after dark).
I've complained to him but he shrugs it off saying he can't control what door people knock on.

They might or might not start keeping an eye on him, depending on the management. Considering there was a shooting in your parking lot, I'd suspect that they will.

(21,786 posts)and assuming you want to call the cops, then the easiest thing to do is go and find a pay phone, call the police (not 911, since it's not an emergency), and anonymously report that you suspect drug activity is going on at Unit Number Whatever at such-and-such apartment complex. (Since you don't have to be a genius to work out that the only reason some sketchy dude is getting a stream of regular visitors who stay for 5 minutes tops is because he's a dealer. Which could mean he's selling weed, but could also mean he's selling meth or something else.)

(34,195 posts)1. He woke me up one night at Midnight. He had some kind of electronic equipment he wanted to sell me.
He said he didnt know what it was, what it did, or how much it was worth ~ but he would sell it to me for $25.
I gave him hell for waking me.
2. He knocked on my door one night at 9 P.M. He said he had 100 pounds of meat he needed to sell.
I told him I wasnt interested.

(17,984 posts)I lived above some drug dealers. Go to the police station and make the report there. They should not have to bother you at home after that. These will not be street cops. They will be narcotics squad. In my case, they were invisible for months. Then out of the blue, I received a call from the head of the investigation team. He said they had staked out the house, witnessed drug sales, and tried to buy drugs on several occasions. Although they did not make an arrest, they were made aware of the activity. I also think maybe the drug dealers got spooked (which was a good thing).
In my case there were tiny ziploc bags lying around the yard. I collected some and handed them over to the police. They definitely had been used to hold crack. If you can find something like that to bolster your claim, then they will have to take the investigation seriously.

(34,195 posts)Go to the area command and ask to talk with someone.
But there's a very murderous gang in the city and if he's tied into them,
I'm a cooked goose.
