And I use Obama Care as a compliment....
Him and I are 50, at a company with a branch that might close down in 2015.
We always worried about finding new jobs at our age and have always worried about those jobs providing Health Care.
When I told him at least we didn't have to worry about health care now if we get laid off, he said "That is only for poor people or unemployed people". He had NO IDEA that it applied to anyone without health care. I sent him the links and he was shocked. Especially at the price. He actually said "Why does everyone hate it?". He really had a change of heart. I admit he is an idiot GOP person at times but I think this made him question why the hatred.
I think the worst part of this is no one knows the benefits and who it covers. We need to get the word out.

(10,252 posts)For starters, the hospitals and doctors, and even the insurance companies, are absolutely going to insist on getting those medicaid expansion dollars--especially since the feds cover the expansion 100% for the first years. Small businesses will insist on access to the non-profit co-op plans offered thru the exchanges. And finally, it's going to be a really hard sell for govs to tell voters that their mandated healthcare money is not coming to their state, but going to another state. Pretty hard, I think.
Iris
(15,673 posts)But it feels like people in my state want to hate someone so much (an alleged black Muslim foreigner in the White House is their wet dream), they are willing to cut off their own noses to spite - who? I'm not sure, but they certainly aren't going to be bossed around by "them."
I think there was actually a book written by historian about 7 or 8 years ago documenting the support of welfare programs in Georgia (and other southern states) when they benefited white people after the depression but as soon as some of them started bouncing back, they hated those programs b/c they benefited "the blacks."
People can be really stupid and bull-headed.
My wife and I took turns working independently. The only way I was able to start an IT consulting business was because she worked and had health care. Later, I got a real job with health insurance so she could start her own business.

(51,744 posts)Thanks so much for the link. It was WAY better than I thought. My brother, who is much too young for medicare, has never had health insurance his entire adult life. He has a pre-existing condition that lands him in the emergency room a few times a year. Eventually, if he continues to ignore it, it will kill him...years before he reaches 65 and is eligible for medicare.
But that AWESOME link you provided just told me that because he makes just under 15,000 a year, he will be eligible for medicaid. Up to now, the state of CA has denied him medicaid because his pathetic low wage job is too much money to qualify for the current criteria for medicaid, particularly for a single male. In fact, they basically told him an able-bodied working male without dependants can't get medicaid. The ACA completely turns that around.
I am sooooo happy. I was worried how he was going to pay for the insurance in 2014, even if at a subsidized premium, since he makes barely enough to feed himself and pay rent.
You made my day, elleng!!!!!!

I got 10/10--the sad part is that's more than 99.6% of Americans. Around half questions were usually answered correctly 40% of the time or less. And yes, death panels, Medicare cuts, and handouts to illegal immigrants were on the quiz.
I was completely embarrassed that I got 2 wrong. I knew I didn't know the intricacies but I thought I had an idea of what was in there. I'm sure over 1/2 the country has absolutely no clue.

(6,145 posts)There are breakdowns for percentage of the population answering correctly. You can see how well the Republican misinformation campaign worked.
58% believed there will be "death panels"
73% believe the law contains a public option
58% believe illegal aliens will get benefits.
75% believe small employers will be mandated.
60% believe all Medicare recipients will suffer cuts.
This quiz is at least one small way to get the truth out about the good things in the law. (although I wish the 73% was right about the public option!)

The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,892 posts)Because they've been told it's another expensive social program that benefits the unworthy poor at the expense of the worthy taxpayer.
And if you try to explain that it will make health insurance available to 30 million people who don't have it and who have been getting sick and sometimes dying because they couldn't get medical care, you will be farting in a whirlwind, because the GOPers and 'baggers have no compassion. They care only about these things: Making sure Obama's signature legislation is repealed, thereby damaging his reelection chances, and making sure no undeserving (read: minority) people get any help.
The explanation has to be something like the OP used: Make it about them. And make it about their favorite thing, "personal responsibility." So here's the argument:
When people can't afford to go to a doctor because they have no insurance, they don't go unless/until they are really, really sick and somebody drags them to an emergency room. They will get treatment there - very expensive treatment - but they won't be able to pay for it (even though they will be billed for it, since, contrary to common belief, ER treatment isn't free). So who does pay for it, Mr. GOPer? You do, that's who. You pay for it because your own health insurance premium will go up, and because your taxes help fund hospitals.
Also, that person who is now very sick is unable to work (maybe he'll die). So he won't be paying any taxes on his wages unless/until he recovers. In the meantime he might lose his job and have to go on unemployment (costing you more money in taxes). He and his family might have to go on public assistance (which you pay for); his wife might have to quit her job to stay home and look after him while he recovers, so she won't be paying taxes, either. The kids might have to drop out of college, damaging their eventual chances of getting good jobs and paying taxes. If the sick person has a communicable disease that he'd probably been spreading around until he got dragged to the ER, maybe you or your kids will get that disease.
But let's say that instead, the person who has had no insurance (maybe because his employer doesn't offer it, or he's self-employed and can't get it or has a pre-existing condition that makes him uninsurable) now can get coverage. He has to have it, and has to pay for it, but now he can afford it. So now he can get regular physicals to prevent serious conditions from developing. If he gets sick he can go to a doctor or a hospital before his treatment gets really expensive, and his insurance will pay the doctor or the hospital so you don't have to. And when everyone has health insurance, a lot more people will seek health care - meaning more jobs for doctors, nurses, orderlies, hospital administrators, pharmacists, clinic employees, and more -- all kinds of good health-care-related jobs that didn't exist before and that will result in more taxpayers. More jobs, less of a tax burden on the rest of us.
How can you not like this, Mr. GOPer? It helps you.

The average person doesn't even know about the website. I made mention of it to others and they had no idea. Last night I sent a link to it on FB and people were messaging me with many "I didn't know that!" comments.
The doctors offices around here aren't mentioning it when people make appointments. It's never mentioned in the numerous newsletters I receive from my insurance company. I don't think people realize how quick some of this has kicked in-most of the comments I hear are about the fines in 2014. When I gave those same people a link to the (I believe it was Wash Post) article that was linked on here with the worksheet about the upcoming costs, they were shocked to find that their costs would actually decrease by considerable sums.
That's what needs to be discussed on television. That's what needs to be passed around in email forwards. The info needs to be posted on Facebook regularly, with links provided for more info. When people realize that it really will help them in the long run they will warm up to it.
