20. The problem with "draining the swamp"
Fri Apr 28, 2017, 08:42 PM
Apr 2017

Draining the swamp to most liberals/progressives means getting rid of corrupting influences. To us that means getting rid of lobbyists for large pharmaceutical companies, fossil fuels, finance, defense, etc... who we perceive as having "captured" government in order to deregulate and stack the deck for the wealthy.

The problem is that it is a sufficiently vague term that can be used and interpreted in different ways by different groups. Trump certainly did not know what he was saying in using the term. He just knew that it resonated with his supporters. I think that his people understood that people were going to put in their own "boogeymen". To the average Trump supporter, "draining the swamp" likely meant getting rid of people who support Black people, LGBT rights, and "the government" in general.

People see the government as a corrupt organization, and in some ways it is. Unfortunately, as we know the Republican party is usually on the side of the corruption. They side with wealth against the middle class, working class, and the poor. They side with industry owners against labor. They side with White heterosexual Christian men against every other group and as such will legislate the benefit of their preferred groups. While many of Trump's supporters fit into that category, they don't all fit in neatly and as we have seen, many of them will ultimately be hurt by his proposed policies. The fact that they don't see that or don't care is a scary thought. They seem to not care as long as other groups which they hate, get hurt worse.

Trump never intended to drain the swamp, he just liked the way the crowd reacted to the phrase. He is an idiot. His supporters even more so.

that dump sold himself to the idiots in part as an outsider who would take on Wall Street and special interests. "Draining the Swamp" was linked with the anti-WS message.

Now one way the dump admin is trying to weasel out--now that it's blatantly apparent he lied about cleaning up WS and in fact is doing the opposite--is to claim "D the S" referred to shrinking the Federal Government to cut "bureaucracy" and "inefficiency".

So, hapless civil servants and Federal agencies working to make the country function are now the targets. Of course, going after the Federal Government is a koch agenda item.

Lying and misdirection--hallmarks of the dump admin.

11. Ted Cruz is Samrter Than Many Democrats
Fri Apr 28, 2017, 07:32 PM
Apr 2017

Ted Cruz was called lying Ted by Trump. Trump relayed, gave voice and credibility to the ridiculous Enquire story that implicated Cruz's father, Raul, in the assassination of President Kennedy. Trump tweeted out a very unflattering photo of Ted's wife along side a glamorous photo of Trump's model wife, like some adolescent punk.

No Democrat, at any level, was personally humiliated like Trump humiliated Ted Cruz.

But Cruz knew that the most important thing in this election was the appointment of a Supreme Court Justice. Cruz, and many like him, knew what was at stake.

Unfortunately, too many Democrats didn't. "I just don't like her, so I'm voting for ...(fill in the blank) instead of Hillary".

Now, we see the consequences of our actions. Maybe we can fix the mistake we made........30 years and 2,000 court decisions from now.

Ted Cruz and many main stream Republicans knew what was important and they ate out lunch.

a right-wing appointment to the supreme court.

How many democrats bit off their nose to spite their face. And none of them were personally offended by Hillary to the point Ted Cruz was.

That supreme court appointment was the real prize in this election, and a lot of establishment Republicans who hated Trump supported and voted for him for that reason. Too many Democrats voted 3rd party and it cost us the election and the ninth vote on the SCOTUS.

If Cruz was smarter than the Dems who didn't vote, voted 3rd party or wrote in Bernie, why is Gorsuch on the SC instead of Garland?

and that, my good friend, is a big F'n difference.

And too comfortable with the fact that Hillary was shoe-in, which didn't turn out that way. I understand her convictions, but I couldn't support the third party candidate or bust nonsense. I really do think she thought Hillary would win either way - that's what the polls were saying. Like many others, she underestimated the amount of really dumb voters in this country.

Trump is a stain on humanity. A year after Obama won I saw an interview with Bill Clinton and he said he regrets not vetoing the Glass Stegall shut down. A couple years later and his wife is in the race and he actually said that veto wouldn't have made a difference. DUH! We can play games all day in the sand and make sand castles but when the tide comes in they aren't worth nothing!

Decades ago, there was an urban guerrilla movement in Uruguay called los Tupamaros. Their stated belief was that if they caused enough mayhem, a reactionary, repressive rightist government would result, and the people would be so disgusted as to rise up, overthrow them and institute a socialist government that would last forever.

They were half right. They did get their repressive reactionary rightist government. The rest didn't happen.

Godot never heard of the Tupamaros.

It's a dangerous risk at best to hope that putting your worst enemy in power will drive a country to rise up and put your best friends in power. What do you do when they don't?

Trump can defund them, but their functions will not be readily forgotten, especially after the country sees what a mess ensues when they are gone, or at least rendered dysfunctional. But for that, we will need a Democratic President and Congress, and one that will make 2009-2010 seem lethargic. The reaction to trump at the ballot box must be swift and substantial, beginning with the governorships up this fall. If we make no gains there, and if our next four years are like the last 100 days, it will be a brave seer indeed that won't write us off for the foreseeable future.

Just because people said Clinton was not the right or appropriate candidate, and had concerns how the Dem party handled the primaries, and would have preferred a stronger more suitable candidate, doesn't mean they (we) hated Hillary.
Most of us actually warned that if she became the nominee it would mean a Democratic defeat, and we were correct. She got beat by Donald Trump for goodness sakes. Almost anyone but Clinton could have defeated him.
Please, stop with the nonsense of dividing the forces you need to help you win in the future by accusing them, or equating them, with haters. Most of the anti Hillary movement were, and remain, deeply concerned about the future of America. We are lovers, not haters.
And maybe you should check in on your own hate, because deeming all of us haters because we didn't see things your way is the true hate!
