OK, I need your help.

Heard a Trump supporter this morning say "He speaks truth to power"

1) Where does that phrase come from?
2) What the hell does it mean?

Thank you for educating me, apparently those two college degrees did not cover this.

As the President of the United States there is no way the buffoon in chief can claim to speak truth to power. He is power and besides that he wouldn't know the truth if it slapped his odd coiffeur awry.
snip for essay: Speak Truth to Power

Our title, Speak Truth to Power, taken from a charge given to Eighteenth Century Friends, suggests the effort that is made to speak from the deepest insight of the Quaker faith, as this faith is understood by those who prepared this study. We speak to power in three senses:

To those who hold high places in our national life and bear the terrible responsibility of making decisions for war or peace.
To the American people who are the final reservoir of power in this country and whose values and expectations set the limits for those who exercise authority.
To the idea of Power itself, and its impact on Twentieth Century life.

I suspect none of the Trump supporters who use the phrase are Quakers or know one damn thing about them.

The right wing takes phrases and slogans and perverts them to have a new meaning that suits them and everyone else still talks to them like it means the same thing.

"Political correctness" has now become a straw man to mean anything liberals like and agree with for example.

"Speaking truth to power" used to mean someone taking a stand, now it means, to them, that someone is standing up and saying all the things they want to hear.

I agree, no one has done so much damage, made such ignorant and dangerous decisions and choices.
