Andy Lack wants to make MSNBC more conservative -HuffPo

WASHINGTON ― On Friday, readers of the new morning email put out by Mike Allen awoke to a little nugget of news. “One of your favorites is getting their own MSNBC show,” he teased in the subject line. That new host was none other than Nicolle Wallace, a former spokeswoman for President George W. Bush and, later, the 2008 presidential campaign of John McCain and Sarah Palin.New York magazine reported hours later that conservative activist and radio host Hugh Hewitt, already a regular contributor to MSNBC, was in talks with the network about a weekend show.

But from inside, the news about Wallace and Hewitt was seen as just two more steps toward the full execution of the vision of Andy Lack, the NBC News executive who oversees MSNBC. He has made quite clear his plan to move the cable news network away from its bedrock liberalism and toward a more centrist approach personified by Brian Williams — or even in a conservative bent, as typified by hosts like Megyn Kelly or Greta Van Susteren, who Lack brought over from Fox News.

Noah Oppenheim, Lack’s new deputy who has a long history of provocative right-wing journalism, is shepherding in the changes — which have coincidentally made MSNBC look much whiter. But Lack, in seeking to make this vision a reality, has an unusual problem for a TV executive: sky-high ratings.

“Hayes, Maddow, O’Donnell ― the entire primetime lineup is doing record numbers and Lack can’t stand it. It makes him furious,” said one well-placed MSNBC source, echoing the sentiment of many other insiders who spoke to HuffPost only on the condition of anonymity. (An NBC spokesman said Lack is happy with the high ratings.)

When conservative media critics point to the “liberal media,” that often includes morning television like NBC’s Today Show. But here’s an interesting fact that may or may not help change that: Oppenheim has a serious background in conservative media.

Before his previous stint with Today, Oppenheim ran the “extraordinarily conservative” Scarborough Country on MSNBC, years before Joe Scarborough became a more centrist-type punching bag for right-wing media.

Further adding to Oppenheim’s conservative credentials is a 2004 report from the New York Observer that alleged he left MSNBC (and presumably moved over to NBC daytime) after network bigwigs complained about an article he wrote for the Bush White House’s favorite magazine, The Weekly Standard, bashing Iraq War reporters as hoping for failure:

That wasn’t the first time Oppenheim had written for the neoconservative publication. In the years before that piece, the TV vet reviewed a Dinesh D’Souza book, took on affirmative action at Harvard University (his alma mater), and critiqued the “ambivalence” of Muslim-American groups in fighting radical Islamism five months after the 9/11 attacks.

Reporters like Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, Chris Hayes, Lawrence O'Donnell, Katie Tur and their ilk do not accept ignoring the truth under orders from above.

Maybe the Obama foundation should consider financing a liberal news channel and hire the real reporters that might be forced out of MSNBC or who have been without a home since Air America folded.

Our other choice will be to stream channels such as Free Speech TV and pump up their ratings.

Kati Tur has been covering various hours during the day - today she was on in the morning.

Some of the other daytime reporters are also good but most of them do not "own" a time slot so it's hard to predict when they will be on. The way that Katie Tur, Kasie Hunt, Hallie Jackson and Richard Lui have been bounced around, it's hard to plan to watch them.

At least I can plan on who NOT to watch with Greta, Brian, and Nicolle - it is harder to avoid Hugh Hewitt since they seem to be scattering him on various shows at various times a day.
