Inslee for President in 2020? Buzz is growing about Washington's governor

There's a growing buzz about the prospects of Washington Governor Jay Inslee as a possible Democratic presidential candidate in 2020. His profile was boosted after Washington state successfully blocked President Donald Trump's first travel ban.

But it could be a crowded field. The Washington Post's Chris Cillizza, who suggested Inslee as a candidate on Feb. 24, just named Inslee among his 22 Democrats who are thinking about making a run.

He puts Inslee in the "2nd Tier," meaning he has the potential to be a major contender, but he's not there, yet.

"That so few people in Washington buzz about the two term Washington governor is a pretty obvious case of East Coast bias," Cillizza writes. "Inslee has spent time in Washington (D.C.) as a member of Congress and got a major media boost from his state's role in blocking Trump's travel ban."

During an interview with The Seattle Times last Friday, Inslee said a presidential run is not something he's been thinking about.

"It’s really not in the stars," Inslee said.

If the primaries began tomorrow he would be my candidate.

There is no point to nominating someone who doesn't tackle climate change in a big way. Jay Inslee seems to be the best candidate on energy and environmental issues.

I didn't know anything about him until working on a WA race last year and kept seeing his ads on TV in my hotel.

I'll admit my first choice in 2016 (Andrew Cuomo) is gearing up to run and it will be a tough decision between the two.

One question about Inslee-- is he termed out in 2020?

he could run.

The last two governors of Washington, Gary Locke and Christine Gregoire, both Democrats, chose not to run for a third term.

There has only been one governor in the history of Washington, Republican Daniel Evans, who has served three consecutive terms. Another Republican, Arthur B. Langlie, served three terms but they were not consecutive.

I don't think Inslee is expected to run in 2020, regardless of whether he runs for president. Bob Ferguson, the Attorney General who was just elected to his second term, is expected by many to run for governor in 2020.
