Like he did to get a new SCOTUS justice placed on the court?

(92,190 posts)disable the filibuster for legislation in the Senate, and as diabolical and evil as these assholes are, he isn't going to stick his neck out on this pathetic excuse for healthcare.
McCain, Graham, Collins, Ben Sasse, Murkowsi, Flake, and there are others including Rubio believe it or not, who will not remove the legislative filibuster, especially for the asshole who occupies the WH, but also because they realize the consequences.

(19,956 posts)Graham and Sasse, I could see be bought off, at the very least.

(98 posts)It's a giant tax cut for the rich so they're allowed to use reconciliation to pass it.
I'm pretty sure that's how we passed it in the first place.
This is just such a tragedy.

(65,173 posts)The pre-existing conditions changes, for example. Hopefully Schumer is savvy enough to find a lot more.

(24,259 posts)Hopefully he's right...
GOP leadership also faces a narrow path if the legislation reaches the Senate. Under the rules of "reconciliation," they can only lose two GOP senators and still pass the bill, because no Democrats are expected to support it.
But Schumer warned the House legislation only has a "small" chance of survival in the Senate and could run into a procedural buzzsaw because of the Byrd rule, which governs legislation passed under the special budget rules Republicans are using to pass the healthcare legislation. To pass muster, legislation must be primarily focused on addressing the deficit, which is why only provisions that have a budgetary impact can be included.
"The amendment to allow states to drop pre-existing condition requirements, for instance, very possibly violates the Byrd rule. If the moderate group in the House gets an additional amendment to the deal with the very same issue, that may violate the Byrd rule as well," Schumer said.

(59,503 posts)It has been a Republican distortion that it under reconciliation. It passed the Senate and because Scott Brown was elected, the House passed it AS IS so it went straight to Obama. Near the same time, a bill with some changes and a college loan change passed under reconciliation.
This Is Wordy AND complicated, But It Is IMPORTANT to never not correct people on that because as you stated that might be what they want to do.

(16,387 posts)Visited in 2015. Beautiful country and people, except for the plonker i had to set straight on Obama (he brought it up).
When Maggie died they danced in the streets in London. Clips are on YouTube as well. Fascinating to watch. I sort of wish we were more like that, honestly. They don't mince words.

(24,412 posts)OTOH I'm not entirely sure how many Republicans actually want to stick their neck out for such a POS bill, especially once the CBO score comes in and we find out exactly how much worse the House Republicans have made it since the last CBO score, which was pretty awful. If the Republicans decide that they really want this to get through, however, they will lie, cheat, and steal to get it through and there may not be much Democrats can do about it. The best scenario is that Democrats are able to filibuster it to death (no way that Republicans will find Democrats to give them 60 votes on this) and then McConnell can just throw up his hands and blame Democrats and let the matter rest. I'm actually hoping for this scenario because we can't count on Republicans refusing to vote against it out of an attack of conscience/concern for the poor and sick.

(11,243 posts)They got their Supreme Court pick. That was the main goal. They know that Trump is a helpless political neophyte and wildly unpopular with most voters. I doubt they would cross the street to pee on him if he was on fire, unless there was something in it for them.
What does he have that they really want at this point? Burr and a few others seem beholden. I dunno. There might be something, but can't think of what.

(175 posts)I don't think he'll end the filibuster over it, that's been too good to Republicans over the years to let go. But will he fudge the rules to allow them to use reconciliation when it's not applicable? You bet he will.

(11,243 posts)They ARE embarrassed about that, but they thought it was worth it to get the SC pick. If they trash the legislative filibuster, they are just the House with longer terms. It pricks their egos.
The other thing, it benefits the Dems in the longterm. GOP knows that Dems will regain control soon and will likely do away with the leg filibuster anyway so they can pass a shit-ton of liberal social policy. Can you imagine how awesome O-care would have been if we didn't have to get 60%? And citizens like socialistic entitlement policy once they actually have it. So the GOP is doing us a favor if they get rid of the filibuster completely. If Dems do it, it looks like tit-for-tat, we did it but they did it too. If GOP does it, they own it all. That is a good thing, from a purely political POV.
McConnell is a shit, but he is not stupid and he controls his caucus, at least so far. The Turtle is too formidable a political foe to deal his party such a self-inflicted wound. Another note, my shitty Senator, Thom Tillis has already come out against it. He is a wily back-bencher. He doesn't talk that much, but he is also not stupid. If he says no, pretty sure that means there is strong sentiment against.
no_hypocrisy
(46,114 posts)To pass the ACHA, the Senate only needs a simple majority vote of 51. Filibuster votes of 60 are not relevant in this situation.
Now if Mitch wants to change the Constitution to make republicans a permanent majority, or alternatively if they have a minority vote, they win anyway, let him knock himself out.
